  1. You could always use a Trewhella - they were designed for pulling trees out of the ground (amongst other things). Here's how to do it: Trewhella manual Here's how NOT to do it:- [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81VyT87aK5Y]Part 1[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQJs9yzqMXI]Part 2[/ame]
  2. Usual method (I understand ) is a slide hammer screwed into the lock barrel, one bang and it's out. I also understand that the same technique normally used for steering locks in the current spate of Defender thefts.
  3. Good point! I didn't realise there was a Wickford in Essex until you pointed that out! Thanks.
  4. Wasn't Britpart by any chance was it?
  5. To be honest I think that sort of thing should be encouraged. After all, if you are that stupid the sooner you remove yourself from the breeding population (and preferable the breathing population) the better. With that guy as a role model what hope would his kids have? Unfortunately in this day and age he or his next of kin would no doubt want to sue someone for compensation for not telling him not to do that! And they'd win. Seriously though that can't be real, can it?
  6. Love her or hate her, she was a giant amongst politicians, especially when compared to the spineless pygmies who came later. I would dare to suggest that she was the last honourable, honest and charismatic politician before the rot of avarice, spin and sleaze enveloped the political scene. The tragedy reading and hearing some of the comments here and elsewhere today is that so many still are unable to learn from the mistakes of history. Without that ability, what hope do we have? Personally I did not always think she was right and certainly did not support all her Governments' policies, but she had my utmost respect as a leader. RIP. I doubt we will see the likes of her again.
  7. Excellent news, thanks for sharing! If I'd known that last week, I'd have driven it!
  8. It'd be good to know if you are able to find out (pm if you don't want to go public). Perhaps the signs have just not yet been taken down. Thanks!
  9. It may be open, as in not blocked, but there were signs at at least two road crossings advising of a voluntary closure. Be good to know if it is legit or not. So many lanes have now been (illegally?) reclassified as "Restricted Byway" it would be a shame to lose another.
  10. It is a very nice, very specialised truck, and the price seems reasonable to me.
  11. I thought the Ox Drove had a voluntary closure to motor vehicles in effect at the moment, at least there were signs to that effect when I crossed it last week.
  12. Have you seen this beauty on the Devon 4x4 forum? Not ideal as a work truck perhaps, but very nice. Has a bolt-on portal axle conversion with central tyre inflation.
  13. Thanks, that is very interesting especially since LBM640 is now so well known on the show circuit! I have never seen a pre-restoration photo of this one and didn't realise how much had had to be recreated (wings, rear body), and also didn't know it had been in Ireland. You still have 71BTO I imagine?
  14. You don't happen to know the reg on that last one by any chance? It's not one I recognise and would be interesting to know.
  15. Thinking about it more, if you did fit those 225/75s I reckon they'd be so "low profile" it'd look like you were trying to pimp your ride! You might have to fit flourescent neons underneath it too!
  16. Jon, a 225/75x16 is smaller than most folk would run on a Defender and might look a bit odd, but would certainly fit. 225/75 give a tyre section width a fraction under 10 inches (8.858" to be precise) but the section height is only 6.6 inches, so in term of ground clearance etc it's going to be more like the old 6.00x16 tyres fitted to SWB leafers. So it'll be wider than your 7.50s by an inch but thinner by an inch. Personally I don't think I'd fit this size, but it's personal choice. I would recommend 265/75x16 or 235/85x16. Sounds a pretty good price if it includes VAT though.
  17. I run BFG Muds, they're so good I wouldn't bother now with anything else. Yes they have their limitations but overall they can't be beaten. On the 110 I am running 285/75x16 on standard rims with 30mm spacers. On the Disco2 I am running 265/75x16 on statdard rims (these will foul the standard front bumper, I get away with it because I fitted a Saudi spec bumper without the bulldozer feature). I used to get 100,000 miles from a set of the original Mud T/As (now known as KM1), I haven't had the KM2s long enough to be sure but after 30,000 miles there is imperceptible wear. KM2s seem to be a bit better on the road than KM1s, although I never had an issues with those either. KM2s are more prone to picking up stones and flints than KM1s which can be a bore. Expect to pay between £145 and £160 per tyre in this sort of size. Sounds a lot but if you can get perhaps 100k out of them it's a complete bargain!
  18. Anyone want a LHD RB44 with only 800 miles on the clock? link
  19. My understanding is that if any kind of winch is used commercially for lifting, then, yes, it needs to be LOLERed. If not, then it doesn't. Obviously this begs the question "what is lifting", and no doubt there is a technical legal answer. I take the view that if a load is supported such that it it is not in contact with the ground etc and will fall if the device fails, it's lifting. If it is in contact with the ground etc and won't fall, it isn't. So dragging a log up a hill is not lifting, even though it may slide down the hill if the winch fails. Pulling a tree over is not lifting since the tree is never supported by the winch, if the winch fails it may fall differently but it's actually falling anyway. Any skyline system would involve lifting however. None of my vehicle winches, Tirfors, or Trewhellas are LOLERed. I don't ever lift with them. I know that Coastguard vehicle winches are however; they do lift with them.
  20. If you look at her feedback profile you can of course see many of the other items she's sold recently.
  21. If you're overdrawn, do they give you money?
  22. Can't be as bad as "Veet for Men":- Amazon.co.uk: Customer Reviews: Veet for Men Hair Removal Gel Creme 200 ml
  23. I guess that one problem is that all that stuff belongs to someone, and they may be a bit miffed if it is recycled without their consent (we all get miffed when certain members of certain communities "recycle" saws from our trucks/lockups without consent). I don't look favourably on people whose motives are financial not environmental in this context. They'll take the stuff to make money from the scrap, not because thay want to clean up the environment. Furthermore, artefacts like those are a record of a chapter of history. An abandoned logging truck isn't an environmental disaster waiting to happen, and will in a few thousand years recycle itself. In the meantime it is as much a part of history as a ruined castle in this country - you could recycle a castle but there would (rightly) be an outcry.
  24. I love the expressions on the face of the right hand sled dog (on the left in the picture) and on the face of the kiddy in the foreground!
