    Cattle are good for clearing brambles. The only issue that I have had is they tend to congregate in one place when not feeding, which can get a bit poached with minor root damage . Check the felling licence, normally have conditions about keeping livestock out for a minimum of 10 years .

    Just be wary 6-12 months down the line, when things aren't going well. I lost a good friend when he relapsed and died of alcohol poisoning. Make sure that you have some support, alcoholism is a life long disease.

    Every one likes a low stump, but it isn't always possible. Big spruce can take a tank of fuel just to trim the knees off, and you are still 18" of the ground. This site is going to be difficult to extract because of the stumps and the size of the timber. Trees are averaging 4m3, and the big ones 6m3 The other thorn in the ointment is about a third of the wood blow down in storm Eunice.

    Its all down to experience , my day rate for cutters is between £90-£200. It is not so much volume felled, but how tidy their presentation is. Most people when they start for me need at least 6 months to get up to speed, and in many cases 12-18 months.

    I like the Igland, but unless they are set up exactly, particularly after a few years abuse, they can be troublesome. Always found uniforest reliable

    Found another Flame shield today, easy to spot, but difficult to photo at the bottom of a hollow tree stump .

    The inline fuel filter on mine is prone to blocking wuth gunk, and is only a fiver to replace. I have found speaking to tech support at Greenmech the best place to start. Always helpful.

    You will need your passport or driving licence to get into the docks. Not sure how Brexit has affected it, but it was very straightforward as the people or used to dealing with clueless fools. When i picked mine up, the ferry had docked about 4am, and i was able to load it by about 8am. Give us a ring if you have any questions 07966 792798

    Those look like Bird cherry, so they wouldn't be exempt. One of the felling licence requirements is re-stocking, so you will need to provide an additional site if you are not intending to restock . Sites like this are always tricky, and the developers just want it done. If nobody complains then you will be fine. Richs idea has merit

    No doubt it would, but i haven't got one. I am having to move timber which is hidden by the brash, which i can't do with a rake.

    The square mouth I think is used on massive tree, but I have never been able to find out the reason why. It is often used with a snipe (angled cut) at the front for the tree to slide down. I know that the humbolt cut was developed with big trees, so that the mouth would slide out when it was cut. Most of the mouths when cut were not able to be moved by hand!

    This is what I like about this kind of stuff, there are soo many variations , and all are equally valid. It is also learning why things have gone wrong, and what can you change to try and make it work. If there are any more similar leaning trees in this wood, I will try both.

    Quite a few people bring the corner of the mouth down, and create a smaller area for the hinge to bend, but I always find that they don't hold. Making the extra long diagonal seems to allow better holding even with trees with poor fiber strength. The down side is the height of the stump, the back of the handle was touching the ground in that video. I am surprised that the stump police haven't swooped in!
