  2. Ha, my old boss used to say that in his quotes and of course no customer had a clue what he was on about! My quotes are all in plain english, far too much arb speak from arborists, customers dont need to hear it aswell! Mind you im writing text for a new website at the mo and I'm sure some if it will sound like total crap to people who know me, just trying to find fluffy ways of saying we are ace, hire us!
  3. Oh, ok, so the video is a trailer of a longer film documentary. But "social complexities of working arboriculture" sounds crap to me!
  4. Nice enough video and good points made by the beardy chap. But read the text on the vimeo page........ Limbwalkers is an independent documentary that sheds insight into the social complexities of working arboriculture. The story explores the connections that field arborists have with the important work they perform, their close relationships with trees, and their voice in broader urban forestry discourses. This film is a tribute to the men and women who nurture our urban trees and maintain our urban forests. What a load of pretentious tosh!! Its just a nice vide about tree work.

  7. If no pyament time was mentioned then there is no payment time! Simple as that, payment is required instantly becuase no payment time has been discussed. You certainly dont discuss the payment time after you've loaded the wood!
  8. A tree bloke using direct language that could be taken as threatening? Whatever next! He probably meant that he didnt want you to be owing him any money, i.e. he would have preffered to have been paid straight away from someone he has never met. Thicker skin or fatter wallet required me thinks. Dont expect tree blokes to be all wordy and say the right things to make you feel better, it rarely (never) happens.

Ok, you dont need a spacer in the pulley if attaching it with a mallion or a krab, its only when attaching it via a loop of rope that the squeezing effect might be an issue so a spacer is required. And then you dont need to protect the cord from the pulley and in fact that protection would stop you being able to inspect it. Better to see whats going on and replace as required. The original mallion is not subject to side loading because of its high SWL but because of its design, its a mallion not a karabiner! so its strong in all directions thats what its for. Ghustarts design looks much better though. Captive eye fishermans knot very neat!
  11. We use solid clip together barriers at either end of a site if the footpath is to be closed, but you cant barrier the whole area, I agree thats not practical. Only problem then though is folk walking in the road, so unless there is space to make a walkway in the road you kind of have to let them through. Footpath closed signs and barriers are ok if they work, but, unfortuantly you cant make people cross the road. Its amazing to me when you see people with kids pushchairs etc. walking down the middle of a main road with traffic coming rather than use the pavement on the other side.
  12. Yeah, it sounds like you have it all covered, and the comms are probably the icing on the cake, but on there own without everything else obviously no good. Yes, well aware of how stupid the public are, and you cant account for stupid.
  13. I can only imagine the scene, maybe machine gun sentry posts next then? So, you kind of made my point for me, helmet coms didnt help, so on top of all the barriers and ground crew the helmet comms were no help, but to have helmet comms instead of all that stuff would be proper pointless. What kind of barriers are you using that are "liftable"? No one gets through my site unless I let them, which we often do as we prefer to keep footways open if possible. We dont run a chipper when theres a climber cutting/moving in the tree though so communication is not too difficult.
  14. How would headsets help in this situation? Surely a properly barriered work area and/or a groundie with eyes/brain would be better?

  16. Locating it on google maps and going and stealing it are two totally different things though. Some of this kit is in vry remote places, if not then it would all have been weighed in years ago.
  17. Really cant remember his name. He's be pretty ancient now though, great bloke. Kind of Fred dibnah and dick strawberry and ranulph feines rolled into one!! We managed to get into the old copper mines, even though all entrances were official closed up in 1938. We found an airshaft and got in. Was like something out of indiana jones movie, spent two days down there looking at stuff! The area is a tourist resort now though, but only open for a month or two each year as its so remote. There was a lodge that opened up for a month while we were there and the same owner still has it now. Just found this on you tube, theres a frickin visitor centre now!!!!   18. Got lots of pics but like I say they are all pre digital and not many scanned in. This one is of where we stayed. Its an old Copper mining town, deserted now, this picture is just the copper processing plant, the copper would come in the top from tramways running off the mountain then gravity fed processing would take it down and be loaded onto trains that ran through the bottom level. Well this was the end of the line for the train track. Alll this built in the early 1900's and all the wood either cut down in the area or hauled in by horses. The railroad was built by a different company who refused to build it until there was coppper ready to bring out, so all this was built before the railway came in!! There was a whole town around this as well all deserted in about 1938. We looked in the old hospital and found records of accidents etc. was a very tough place to be! The area in the foreground is glacier but covered in rock was from the plant.

I went to Alaska for three months in 1990, was an amazing place, saw lots of old trucks, not necessarily logging kit but lots of earth moving type stuff and cars etc. Got quite a lot of photos but all pre digital. Met a bloke who lived up there after buying land from the state at 1 dollar an acre, he then cut down trees to make a runway for the plane he had built, then used those trees to build a house etc etc. he was a very clever man! An ex engineer who had decide to retire in Alaska. Anyway he use to like going out trekking for days on end (well you would!!) and in the area he lived there was lots of copper mining activity. One day he came across an Old Ford Model AA in the middle of some woods, probably an old prosprectors vehicle. Now, an AA is a flat bed model of the original Ford Model T. So quite a special vehicle. He looked it over and figured he could get it running! SO he walked the 2-3 days home got some tools and walked back again. Then back and forth on and off for three consequetive summers when he had time and on the third summer he drove the vehicle back home but had to cut down trees as he went so that took 4 weeks! We did some work for him in exchange for decent meals hot showers etc (all home made solar powered showers of course) and the truck was in use hauling wood. Here it is loaded up, doing what it does best. Notice he's named it "rigor mortis".
  20. I was thinking at forst that if I had made the ZZ I wouldnt have bothered with the swivel, I'd rather it just sat centrally and not left or right. Then it occured to me today that its there so that you can clip direct to a bridge, or to a sliding D, and it can swivel into the central location. So I dont think its supposed to be a smooth swivel like, well, a petzl "swivel" its just there to orientate the zz how you want it.

  22. Oh, ok, just an exclamation mark! so you might just shout a bit if you use a knot. I used a Knot yesterday as my ropeguide got stuck while I was trying to move anchor points to a different stem, so pulled other end up and through the ZZ and used it on my plain end of rope with a knot. WORKED FINE!!!!

  24. You could tie a bowline with a long loop so that the knot part is up well away from the ZZ.
  25. There is a way round issue 1. but not sure if its enough of an issue TBH. You could install a fixe pulley below the ZZ. The cheeks of it would just sit either side of the karabiner that is attaching the ZZ to your harness. Then you could pull a bight from between the two pulleys and have your saw attached to that and sent up. Two pulleys though, just to achieve that, not really worht it, although the choice of secon pulley might help with issue 3. I have notice that the rope flips out here easily.
