  1. Hi. We have two large beech TD's to do, one this week and one next (with Luke) Plenty of wood available but plenty of people keen. It needs to go each day though, could you come in to chelt on thursday this week and get some? Then we can discuss the other one which is bigger and out of chelt, maybe to far for you.

Hey Mark! How are you? I was sure you going to berate me for promoting use of stuck together ascenders! Yes they can be dodgy and I should have said back up is essential. Anyway, insulting tape is too offensive for your delicate ears Mark. I've got a roll that calls me a *&^% on a regular basis so I leave it in the shed with my talking boots, they get on fine!
  3. I agree its not the best termination not, whatever its called, thats why I forgot it too!
  4. Is it buntline or something ???? Or scaffold hitch???

You probably ought to back up one of the lines if you use an apline butterfly knot on the access rope. If not then you should really back up both lines. This is the more difficult bit! When the two are joined together its not possible to put a karabiner through the tope holes of the ascender so attachign a back up is not easy. A lehgth of rope passed throught the top holes and tied on with a friction hitch is one easy way but the added friction defeats the object of using ascenders. The petlz ascentree ascenders are easier to back up, and this is why the are more advantageous.

Handles together. It actually works really well. Handles aposed just wont work with these type of ascenders. (I'm assuming NZ paul means left and right handled ones) Your second hand just goes on the rope below the ascenders, which is mostly how I use double handles ascenders anyway, especially if in contact with trunck and/branches on the way up. Double handles are ok for straight ascents in mid air. Put them back to back and fix together using zip ties. Or, for a more permanent solution trim the inner part of the rubber handle away from each ascender (get an adult to help you with a stanley knife!) and then tape the two together with insulting tape. I would recomend buying double handled ascenders over this option, but if you have two ascenders not being used much then this is a good method.

I think two petzls stuck together are almost easier to use than double handled ascenders. And of course they could still be used in an srt set up just by using one of the cams only.

Ah! Are they handled ascenders and are they left and right? (one yellow and one blue) if so they can be fixed together to make a nice double, or you would just use one on a single rope but you would then need a croll and maybe a pantin for the full srt set up. Doubling up the two ascenders you have would be the best option IMO.
  9. Yes, its either an early entec (now timberwolf) or its an ex hire machine. The ones for hire come direct form entec instead of through the timberwolf dealership so they remained yellow (and called entec) after the same model had changed to orange timberwolf. Its hard to tell from the pics if its a newer hire machine but the respray might be trying to cover up that fact.

What sort of ascenders do you have?
  11. Cool. I'm all info'd up now!. Lucky you, thats a good thing to have under your belt.
  12. Yeah but, why did you have them already?? Did you do it while in the SAS? I'm genuinly interested, was meanign to ask you when I next saw you but since you started your own thread I thought I would ask. I always thought it seemed a big truck for a youngster like your self?
  13. Yeah but, did you have those already?? or take an extra test? I have C1E on my license is that the same thing?
  14. Its just when you take a top out on a lowerign line, the line goes slack for a bit and then "snatches" tight again. This is the way most likely to snap ropes, break riggign point or throw the climber around, especially if done in the old school meathod of wrappign the lowerign line round the tree. Its best to minimise this snatch as much as possible or completly by usign a decent lowerign bolloard and havign a groundie who knows what he's doing. Then snatchign is not really snatching anymore its just controlled lowering of a section form above the riggign point. Therefore snatchign is a fairly outdated term but probably still in use all over the place.
  15. Pete, another question mate.........Did you have to upgrade your driving license in any way? HGV?
  16. No, some modern rubbish, surely??
  17. Ok. I'm happy now. Before it was fine, but hard to manoevre and easy to overload. You made it more simple to use and fit for purpose! Like it. Wasn't sure if it was something that "had" to be done or not. I do like it though, i'll put one on the list. I'm think of another LDV project first though. camper van!
  18. ANd the crunchie plane, based down the road from me.
  19. I'm tryign to find photos.... These ones have external/seperate harnesses but you get the idea
  20. Yeah, he stopped for a "moment" with himself! Only possible excuse is that it was an old GQ harness, which without a rope attached (we never had lanyards then) ther woud be no jingly janglies on it at all so almost invisible. I could spot it when I drove past though! I've seen the Crunchie wing walker girls in the supermarket in their flying gear and harnesses but thatr was completetely excusable! (The harnesses are built/sewn into the fling costumes so not that easy to remove!)
  21. Not carrying much in that state. Can you explain the build process Ed? Genuinly interested.
  22. Good pics. Robins are well cheeky!! HAd one nearly come and take my sandwich the other day. Chicken nibbles it is then.
  23. I think one-armed Pete used to have one of those!
  24. Pete, I've been meaning to ask you. What was the purpose of shortening the truck? I'm guessing weights and classifications etc. but what classification was it/ is it now? Also, did it need to be shortened in order to allow for the weight of the crane? Or am i barking upt the wrong street? ( I would say tree, but thats silly)
  25. I've seen one wearing a harness going into a bank !!!!!!!
