  7. on the alder thing i think i read somewhere venice is built on alder i will try and look it up.
  8. I got called to an old mans house because he was getting smoke in the house, he was burning green wood i took the six inch pipe off and it was blocked apart from a tiny hole the size of a pea. he was lucky he never died.
  9. I live next door to the gamekeeper he fells an ash tree and puts it on the fire i dry mine first.if you drive past look up at the chimney his cap is black and my smoke is white his is blue. the man in the big house burns only ash and i have to season it for three years.
  10. The little green men on the sun have seasoned thier wood so it burns hootter.
  11. I agree mr ed and the woodman before me said alder would not burn rubbish if it is well seasoned brill and why is it then that alder is one of the best woods for charcoal. did they also make something out of alder oh i remember CLOGS british clogs lets all make a pair then we will know each other when we meet:thumbup1:
  12. I was looking through the members list and thought what a lot of 0 posters lets see if we can get every one with 1 post. WHAT I LIKE BEST ABOUT MY LIFE WITH TREES? This can be anything from your favorite saw, favorite tree, best woodland, the wildlife or birds anything you like as long as it is in some way associated with trees. Have a go you might get addicted. My love is oak trees i just did a walk here with RFS and everyone said to me you are dedicated to the trees yes i am iam just a steward to look after these trees for a short while and pass them on to someone else to look after. they will live on i will be forgotten.
  13. yes i have a one wood of coppice ash and oak with sallow hazel ect and the big boss wants it re coppiced but the game keepers are saying no, but i dont understand that because a pheasant is a bird of the margin and will only go in a wood if it is managed it needs to be able to see predators.plus you need the sunlight to produce grass and weeds which gives them insects to eat and ground cover to nest. sorry i have gone adrift to the thread. where do you live mr firewood man.
  14. yes two years ago i felled a spruce plantation the agents here said burn it where it was , so i took it home air dried it for 1 year. last year i burnt it in my wood burner just as hot as most woods burnt maybe a little quicker but because it was dry it was as good as any wood then i put a big piece of oak on and shut down and it will still be alight in the morning.I think this thread is going to be a long one more interrest in this than i thought.
  15. i agree one of the best firewoods is blackthorn how many people can be bothered with it, they put it through the chipper. dont forget there are three warms in firewood 1 fellingand cutting 2 splitting and stack 3 sit in front of on the fire. anouther class one firewood is hazel i have got 60 year old hazel coming to the end of its life but if it was coppiced it would live hundreds of years with a supply of firewood.
  16. nice job lads. i see dairy crest took the firewood.
  17. Have you got room for me and the wife we have not had a holiday in 7 years.were only little people.
  18. yes i will also go with both of them i was going to put the top one.
  19. A chap walked into my yard and told me he was a wood turner asked me for some wood. well he gave me such a sob story about he had no money and could not pay. so i said he could have a couple of oak burrs and some yew and he said when he picked it up he would bring some wine and beer.deal i said. the day came and he arived in a brand new 4x4 pick-up i loaded the wood and he said he did not have the drink, then he had the cheek to ask for some more.
  20. Ithought you would have one of those small portable computer things so you could chat all day while on holiday. have a good holiday:biggrin:
  21. good luck chris. iseem to have lost the link to your bat site.
  22. number 3 looks a bit like sulphur tuft(hypholoma fasciculare. number 4 looks like pseudotrametes gibbosa. let me know if you find out.
  23. Too true nothing wrong with alder i gave aload of 6 inch logs away and the people came back wanting more said they loved it.
  24. You wont get any better than iron oak, stag headed oak, the fire will be so hot you wont get near it. If you want to keep the fire in all night last thing before you turn in put on oak logs in the round. As for lighting dry twigs or sticks as soon as this is alight put on a few pieces of softwood the resin soon gets it going then on to your prefered logs.
  25. Well done nick. did you check in the chute before lowering the back just in case you had a stowaway, or left your boots in there.
