  1. I will read and post any thoughts i may have.
  2. Our tree contractor was working on roadside oak trees dead wooding one needed to be reduced down the main stem a little i asked him to put a coronet cut on the top, the tree is still very high and no one in the village has ever seen it or said that they have. I think it looks real cool keep a few bugs happy. the tree next door to this has stag beetles so we are really happy:001_smile:
  3. On the woods departments H&S riskassessments it says contact with fugal spores LOW maybe i need to change it to at least medium. also i know a forester who died of lymes disease a tick bite and this is not even on there i asked for the risk assessment to be updated 4 years ago.
  4. ditto i first thought that.
  5. What was Richmond park like? was it a royal hunting forest? did you learn anything about veteran trees. was mr ancient tree man there ( ted green ) at least you are not to far from the show. david
  6. If you go down to the 10th AA arborists trade fair you will be in for a big surprise, you will find 1000 arbtalk members. i had to work:bawling:
  7. On the estate we have had two workers died of cancer in a year. i have been asked to make a bench out of a whole oak trunk to which a plaque will be fitted.has anyone got any good pictures of seats to help me get started. many thanks i am sure you will help.
  8. I have got a processor here which is good but as steve said the wood really needs to be straight here in a woodland setting i get all pole timber just right. i also have a highcrack wormer no problems with it just put a new tip on and you cant beat the sound when you put on a big oak ring crack. used to have a saw bench but hse condemed it:thumbdown:
  9. wow what make is it and how much does it cost. i get all the wood i want here and its free apart from a little hard work. david
  10. try some lakeland fell walking or a run up skidaw.
  11. i used to go to church as a child but when i became an adult i put aside childish things.
  12. i think the lesson here is do not quote a fact from a book because not every one will agree but then it does then become a debate and every one will learn david.
  13. i am into veteran trees and i would not cut one down and i know that the habitat in my 600 year old oaks is important. getting back to saying goodbye i have lost two 400 ish year old oaks in the park the first thing i do is give them a moment and think about thier life then i cut all the branches off to feed the deer and cattle then the trees will be used to the max. ps windblow butt rot.
  14. It was quoted as a fact in a tree council book, authors jon stokes, john white. i dont really know how much oxygen trees give off ive never asked one. but it sounds as if you are a boff on the subject. ps not taking the mick some one should know.
  15. grand job sort of thing i would do. i ride around this estate all weekend for no pay just thanks from the trees. and my wife thinks i am mad.
  16. keep us posted with how it responds you may be lucky.
  17. a forester once said to me david before you fell a tree give it a moment to thank it for its life 2 0r 3 hundred years is a long life. and one tree supplys oxygen for 18 people for one year fact theres a tree in my garden haha.
  18. no i have never seen one just read alot about them. i to have been round staverton good place for epiphytes rowen, silver birch, holly in the oak trees. and i have been to windsor wow my kinda place.
  19. I am sure you are right about the kids and the fire but keep in your mind that when lightning hits a healthy oak it runs down the outside heating up the sap which explodes throwing bark everywhere.when lightning hits hollow oaks it always takes the best route down which is round and round the insde of the trunk and it burns as it goes down leaving the inside black, so in a parkland setting people say this tree has had a fire no usualy a strike in a hollow tree.
  20. in 1882 a cencus was taken of mistletoe oaks and it was found to be twelve in the whole country,it was said they were touched by druids(druid oaks) of course today we know it is the european mistletoe that grows in oak trees. in 1882 the best mistletoe oak was in moccas park with 15 balls of the parasite.there was another one at eastnor this tree was 100 years old with 5 balls on it i wonder if it is still there. members and guests have you seen any druid oaks.
  21. you might be right i keep meaning to check if the carving comp is on it is the only show my wife and kids love going to.
  22. i cant remember what shades and shorts are.
  23. its now 3.15 and still raining just been out on my quad to look round some trees wrapped up like it was christmas ho ho ho:001_cool:
  24. spreads like the pox in an ash wood. if you were a forester with timber crops it would have to go, but in a park setting let it stay there are too few old ash due to its firewood qualitys, tidy it up and let it grow old with respect.
  25. sorry iwish i had read these before posting the topic. good reading not heard of most of the makes can you buy any local to me suffolk. i like the sound of stove with back boiler and kettles on top for brew.
