Don't get me started all the estates around here are getting rid of there woodmen and using contractors but they do not get a feel for the woods like i do and get to know every tree and wild flower the animals and birds. Iam starting planting on monday one small plantation and 2800 hedge plants back breaking on your own still at least i have got a job.

  3. If you don't mind me asking where do you work? yes my job is hard work i am the only woodman with 187 acres of woodland and a400 acre park not to mention all the hedges and hedge trees that go with a 6000 acre estate.

  4. Cordwood is wood to be sold as firewood and a stack measures 4 feetx4 feetx8 feet and there is 1.41 cube in a cord.

  6. I hope you are alright ? I live at the top of an avenue of veteran oak trees and with this strong wind it roars like a lion. The problem is thin walls and i may loose some, never mind it goes with the job.

  10. Iwould buy your own PPE some of the smaller things you don't need if you want to be a woodman it is a good idea to carry a whistle and when you get a job and earn wages buy timber tongs heaven to your back you pall logs in the centre and not twisting your hip and hurting your back:001_smile:

  16. yes he is coming to me shortly take trunks out of the park. i thought it might of been yours andy.
  17. A local tree person! he also said fuel filters should be changed every year and not just cleaned.
  18. I have lots of maidens i was looking at on yesterday went for a walk in the park with the wife and dogs and we stood looking at this oak a monster it has a lightning strike which has now healed over or should i say sealed over
  19. Is there any legislation on a service on chainsaws e.g. i heard A.V. mounts should be changed every two years.

  22. A maiden is an uncut tree. our avenue of oak trees have now all sadly been cut,i have just finished my fungi report and for safty they had to be topped we did leave one but the wind caught it and it got root heave and would have gone over:001_smile:
  23. Maybe it stops when conditions are not right. I have two very large and old oak trees with Ganoderma i have watched it for 6 years this year it is not active all the old fruiting bodies are there still but no new ones. Also i have got beech with ganoderma and after 6 years they are still solid, but red oaks with ganoderma go soft within a year or two.
