  1. appologies for my sarcastic comment earlier, id just got up and was on my way (on my day off!) to take a load of 14-18 year olds go karting (im a scout leader!) and i wasnt really in the mood! i was debating startinga thread in the pictures section. no words other than wood species with the appropriate picture... Ben
  2. Well i started that thread a long while ago, so some one move it if you so wish, it seemed to fit in with the artistic side of things, ie wood patterns, shapping it etc. If anyone wanted to post in the chainsaw carving sub-forum then surely they could press the "chainsaw carving" button, then look for a relevant thread, or start a new one. I had noticed a few other woodturning threads in the sub forum, so figured it fit in well... Ben

looks good buddy, have to say ive never heard of a spindle without a thread, but im relativley new to this game! been pretty quiet on the turning front recently, need to get my self in the mindset for returning to work, managed to get my self a job at last! groundsman with east riding council. full time. cant complain! Been pruning a few apple/pear/plum trees this week so got some green wood to make a few bits out of. will probably wax some bits and season it for a year or two. Not the ideal time of year for a harsh prune but lots of snow and wind damage over the winter so had to be done! Ben
  7. Hey I have had speach therapy in the past but non of it seemed to make any difference, I had to develop my own sorta technique, with some help from michael palins course (i saw a bit on tv!) I definatly go through stages of being fluent, and well, not! Ive not heard of the mcguire program to be honest, Ben
  8. I tried to say somthing like that up there, unfortunatly my typing words failed. again. Its infurtiating though, so much to say and you cant. keep calm and breath. Ben

Indeed sir! ive been hoping ive missed somthing simple but doesnt look like it unforunatly! It is indeed wierd, the thread on the insert i ordered is visibly larger, ive misplaced my verniers so cant give exact numbers but id say its 2mm bigger. doing my head in i want to go play as ive an order for a bowl for a wedding present that i cant do! i have indeed taken the old insert out! and that is the insert i have bought (from poolewood) (Actually on the ink you sent me previously) and it doesnt fit the chuck, its like the thread is too big, i dont think its m33x3.5 it looks bigger somthing like m34/35, perfect snug fit on the spindle mind. Unfortunatly its not no, its a fox. IM debating selling the fox and getting a nova or a sorby. i ordered a nova adaptor as i was under the impression that it would fit the fox chuck from the fox website, unfortunatly thread adaptors arent classed as accessories or taking the spindle out and getting it built up in weld, then re-tapped to 8tpi. They are all willing to help, its just a thread that no one uses any more. all very helpful rang a few places, dug round for ages in old tool boxes but no luck! i might go back on monday and ask em to screwcut, i know the thread form so shouldnt be hard. 55' 10tpi. otherwise known as 1" bsf! i could buy the tap for 20 quid i just dont want to buy a tool that ill use once then leave in a box! Ive been round all theprecision engineering companies in selby with no success, as its an unusual thread these days, even in the old school heavy engineering places no one has a tap left. the company i bought the chuck said that all sorby and nova accessorys fit, but they dont class the thread adaptors as accessories so its technically my fault. ive got a new toy and i cant use it! its infuriating! the chuck is m33x3.5 spindle needs to be 1"x10tpi, (its currently 3/4x16tpi) Ben
  17. Yep i want to see it, just not had the time or spare money yet. I want to take a few friends with me to show that other people have stammers as well and it is hard work, Im not doing it for amusement! Ben

Very nice pal, very nice indeed! not sure on the wood though! well ive not been able to use my new lathe as the company i bought the thread adaptor off failed to mention it wont fit my particular chuck (even though i was told by the chuck manufacturer it would. soo anyone here got a 1"bsf tap kicking about!? Picked up my new lathe the other day - thanks KIT! - just got it set up in the garage, may need a fiddle with the bearings as they are a bit noisey, but im not sure what they are meant to be like! one hell of a mission to bedale yesterday though, was meant to be going to a uni reunion in north allerton (all of 7 miles from bedale!) the same day so thought id combine the two (logical!) took 2 bloody hours to get to NA from bedale! bloody a1 road words reroute you up to catterick and back down a small b road. accident on the b road so was diverted again round a smaller road! all with 42st of cast iron in the back! still managed 45mpg though ill get some pics tomorrow, just ordered the chuck instert so i shold be throwing out some stuff again! Ben

yep there are loads on there! Personally id avoid the clarke ones at all costs, thats what ive got/started out on. good to learn the basics but youll soon out grow it, or itll break one of the two! Record lathes are pretty good though I found this site when i was starting out that is useful - Buying a lathe and starting out in woodturning. covers pretty much everything! Ben

SNAP thats what i did. just taught myself, keep practicing, get a few books and itll all fall into place. green wood is easier to turn IMO its softer and "peels" a bit better. seasoned is where its at though, its harder, it finishes better and doesnt distort when it dries! Ben
