  1. Here's me knocking the top out of a big poplar at full stretch in an 18. Stem had a big lean angle and was 28" diameter where I felled it with bore and dog tooth and deep side cuts. Pictures a bit poor as its scanned from a paper copy of photo an old guy took from a third floor window.
  2. Carry on topping them out like that and you'll always be remembered as the young tree surgeon who needed the money.
  3. Dean, do you not have to set up the RQG18 the other way round on that slope? Only because I'm guessing the tree to be worked on is right of the picture and the MEWP doesn't have continuous rotation? Push the valve in and raise the basket and then park it uphill. I have done this with this model of mewp before. BTW, the RQG18 is a one of the best machines for dismantling I've used.
  4. Sorry sir, won't happen again! Sounds like something contaminating the ground if its affecting two totally different species?
  5. Thanks Monkeyd, I think they have seen the brackets for a year or too. I don't know whether I'll get the work, despite the price, as I couldn't get the client on my 'wavelength'. The sort of old type that looks down on you as you are just a 'treeman'. And that expect you to jump when they want and to be grateful to be considered for the work. I was told by the woman at the doorstep before I'd seen the tree that "You will need four men for four days!". I said it was a very uncomplicated piece of dismantling work with few targets, and it could be comfortably completed by three men in a day without any damage to the lawn and surrounding etc... Don't think she believed me! I was then told when I would have to do it and I said that they would have to wait six weeks until I was available to do it. "And who have you done work for?" she obviously hadn't taken a shine to me, I then trotted out some very high profile clients in the area which made her eyebrows raise somewhat. Took my toadstool pictures and left! Anyway, rant over! Interestingly, this is the first good example of the 'thin' Meripilus that i have come across, usually see the other thicker sort which looks like eggy bread!
  6. Maybe the bloke that lives there has a slash there every night after the pub so he doesn't wake his missus up flushing the bog when he rolls in after shutting time! My mum and dad had a bit of privet that suffered from that about 20 years ago, strangely it went on to make a full recovery shortly after I left home!
  7. The tree is a copper beech, and is nigh on defoliated. Its in a private garden in a lawn, but its leaning away from the house - just!!! All they're are bothered about is finding somebody who can take it down without ruining the lawn! I don't know if i'll get the job, I got the impression I was only being used as a pricing yardstick against their regular tree surgeons.
  8. Just outside Driffield these days.
  9. Are the ornaments free too?
  10. Good news chaps. I have been in touch with Nicole Ball at the FCA to enquire if they were doing the discounted APF show tickets as last time - and they are! £6 for a single ticket for members, £12 for each subsequent single ticket bought by them for non-members. I'll paste in her email:- ...Donald has rung this morning to say that your idea to put the APF ticket offer onto Arbtalk, is a great one. But just to be careful that people understand the offer is £6 for a single ticket to FCA members, and then £12 for each subsequent ticket bought by them for non-members. Last year we accepted cheque payments, which was fine except it got a little tense as we got nearer to the show date, with me panicking that I couldn’t get the tickets out to members in time. This year, we think it will be better to accept payment by card over the phone only – that way, the tickets can be sent out promptly. All folk need to do is ring 0870 042 7999 and they can pay by credit or debit card. (It might be worth noting that people can join over the phone this way, as well – just for speed). The tickets are on their way to me as we speak, so we should be up and running by the end of the week – but I’d say from Monday (11th) onwards to be on the safe side. Hope that all makes sense! Speak to you next week, Nicole Nicole Ball Membership Manager FCA Membership Ltd Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.fcauk.com P O Box 11443, Ellon, AB41 7WX Tel: 0870 042 7999 Hope this is of use to those thinking of going. All the best, Nige.
  11. Just to bump this thread up to the top again... and I'll start a new one. FCA offering discounted APF show tickets to members and non members.
  12. Now is not the time to be dropping prices. All other trades have put theirs up in the last year, tree surgeons should do likewise if they already haven't.
  13. What's the French equivalent of VAT? How many % and can we in the UK claim it back? If so it makes them reasonably priced. Mind you, if you read one of the recent threads, wouldn't we would be unprofessional using chainsaws to prune with instead of handsaws?
  14. Just as the commentator says "Stuarts a professional tree trimmer...":scared1: Stuart tw*ts the boat with a great branch!
  15. side x side x twice height / 6
  16. Re:- networking. Who are you fella? No sign written van, so didn't know you were there! I might have some work this back end if your interested. pm me. Nige, E.R.A. All the best for the wedding buddy.
  17. Most excellent name toxteth! welcome. Does your record still stand after all these years?
  18. Thats a very interesting link and further clarifies the position. In theory then you could test a 110 as a van or a car? I think I will therefore continue to pay £50 for a van test as opposed to £40 for a car test as then i can tax it as a van for £180 / year, and not worry about car tax going through the roof.
  19. Dean, I'm still waiting for a one day switch off from feb for one site. On another site, as part of a larger contract, I'm waiting since end of april. I've told my client I'll do all the other work that I can do and part bill them which they have agreed to. Its bloody ridiculous. I think switch off are now done by a division of Fountains for YEDL's veg management lot, but I may be wrong. I've tried numerous times of going round the call centres and quoting job numbers, to no avail. All i'm told is that its logged and 'someone' will be in touch. It always was long winded, but these days its virtually impossible.
  20. Some Dryads saddles on a stump today.
  21. I have now got someone suitable for the job by a recommendation from the forum.
  22. Nice vid. Clearly explained.
  23. I have a copy of the technical data sheet for a MKII capstan, but theres no instructions as such, just dimensions and swl etc. any help?
  24. Try this http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_4022514 goods vehicles over 3000kg and under 3500kg are class VII. Therefore commercial 110 and 130 landys are goods vehicles, so are same test as transit etc. and same tax disc. I don't know the plate weight of a 110 double cab or station wagon. If they are under 3000kg like a 90 landy then they are a car and are class IV car test and car tax, if they are over that then they are a van.
