  5. saying that about the tdi version opion- they are only on the older models. think i looking at tad later. thank you for all info.
  6. thats realy intersting thank you. i have been looking on the net at prices for each and its so hard to know where to spend the money.!! as for the troopers i not really a fan purely my own daft opion with nothing to back it up- just not for me. do you find that the disco commercial is very echo y being the van or are modern, car derived vans better than they were years ago.? dont suppose you know nuch about the 200/300 tdi versions. my price range is like many peoples, cant work out whether to chuck alot or a little at it.
  7. Sorry ours is a 5 series skidsteer. ( even thats heavy with fluid weight). A good friend of mine who is a digger driver has a landcruiser ( v reg) but top of the range with alot of bells and whistles. i took it to leeds to collect a 15m self propelled mewp (wouldnt know weight 3t ish with trailer?) and was very comfy, didnt really notice the journey where as in ranger or transit,i would of got out with back ache. is there a certain disco commercial to avoid- the farmer at yard has a 110 defender td5 05 reg that had alot of engine issues when it hit 60k.
  8. I kinda in the same situation. Obviously for chip trucks we got the new transits with ally hi sided bodies but i also got a ranger double cab.mainly for site work and quoting etc. the ranger has been a great work horse and tows really well. it comfortably tows the green mechs inc 1928 both local and motorway journeys. we do put the bobcat 7 series on a plant trailer and tow that with it too but its on its limits towing wise both legally and in my opion its own capabilities. I thinking of the tax year ending etc so looking at my options. all i can find is older 110 van types with 600ish milage for about 9000 ish and lots of the navaras etc. any one use the new shape range rovers- they come down alot and are in budget at about 10-12 throgh private sale. what would every one suggest. happy new year all.
  9. Kelly kettle every time. i use a wee bit of fire lighter then put kindling in. i keep a bag in van of dead sticks from when you do a dead cherry/pear fell then when your raking garden easy to chuck bag full in van.!! LOVE IT
  10. we subed for a company who subbed for another who subbed for another. think we were sixth in the chain. We just charged our day rate of 590 for three man team plus chipper. then put on fuel charge of 210 a week as we were doing 130 mile a day round trip so diesel was something to cost in. also depends on who your subbing to- if is a highways consultant not tree co then bear in mind they dont know exactly what is involved. if you can do it piece work then you can earn what you need to make it pay. i think i'm right in saying that 90% of motorway work is now nights- due to tm costs. if your on nights then ideally set a good night rate and get the best machines for the job- nothing worse feeding small machines all night. we just done a night job for a civils company that happiliy paid twice our day rate. good luck. dont envy you. what motorway you on?
  11. hey all. i'm looking for a subbie for a minium of two weeks starting 27th oct. if interested call me asap my number 07985467222 Thanks Ed
  12. out of the machines in the poll above i would go for green mech, purely as i like the blade system, but as i have had a tw and spent alot on bearing issues i still bear a grudge but they are a great little machine. never owned a jensen but had a tracked machine on hire for a contract for night work and i didnt stop moaning about it for weeks, the plastic strips and highway hawthorne was not a match made in heaven- mind you once it processing straight timber it was a joy. i'm just a fan of american kit as when it goes wrong you can fix it yourself as parts a nice a big and easy to access, (just like tw150 blades!!!!!!!NOT!!!!!!!)
  13. i also use red 5 t slings on lumps of timber, im not one for chains used them once and found it really clumbsi- but thats my opinion. got a selection of small 1 t and 3t sling for smaller limbs. i have tried it out using a 8m length of 16mm marlow double braid so that i could tie off limb at tip and close in then put a "sling prussik" at middle point. only the once as it was over a fully glazed swimming pool building!! i personally feel that slings is so quick and in my eyes safe when using large equipment.
  14. i had an f reg one about seven/ eight years ago, funny thing just showed mrs the picture to which she reminded me that on our first date it was raining she got in truck all pretty and the sun roof leaked a little!! well alot but not my side (dog never minded)!! is it the turbo model, unfortunately mine was normall asp so tad sluggish!
  15. mate thats great! i had a stump grinder stolen nearly four years ago from a job and that too showed up on ebay. it just shows that you need to be able to id your own kit, i for one always mig weld EH ( my initials) on it in three or four places. i always weld it on the very under side so even if theives see it and remove it on top theres a chance they wont on the bottom. as for the Travellers fair, what is that about, surely if these take place then it would be a prime place for police to look for stolen property????:confused1:
  16. hi ya got down the yard this morning to find out that the farm's quad bike which is a 250 honda quad was pinched on saturday night. not only did they pinch the quad it had our sprayer on it with 70 ish litres of round up left in! typicallyt they couldn't find a way out of the farm so cut the fence in 4 different places! evil evil scum but you never now it may just turn up. the quad is about 8-9 years old so its not sparkling but it was very tidy for a farm bike. it was taken from a yard in buckinghamshire near aylesbury. tank you all for reading this.
  17. In my opion a test would be a great idea and just last month i was stopped at a vosa weigh bridge and they went over the chipper more than my van, odd i thought un till i asked the question to which the answer was 'your van is up to date with all nes tests but trailers dont have tests so we like to examine carefully all that we stop' only thing he picked up on was fog light on light board didnt work. and yes he issued me a pink form saying i had one week to sort it.(mind you no one has checked)! am i right in thinking that lorry trailers have to have some form of test carried out.
  18. alritey mate i in brighton, well just outside in saltdean. hows the course going i know alot of new commers that did it through plumpton and said they enjoyed it. you doing the intense course of just various tickets?
  19. hello mate i'm in brighton where i run my own setup but i subbie for about six or seven local tree companies and we all swap each other for days, works really well but work isnt about for new commers with the smaller firms, just not enough work to go round but you do have a few large co's down here like cronnick, kps, bartletts and i think the street team contract has been split up with a couple of o9thers tim jordan i think. i would recomend you go with them if you want the regular wage packet while your starting off, if you fancy the odd day with us pm me.
  20. evening all my first post in a while just been flat out, can you not get another assesor to asses you with in two months time? shame your up there and im down here as i know many good assesors that often have free spaces and i would love to climb with you if you ever come down sussex.
  21. there are a pair of ANSELL FOAM gloves on the market and they are just dreamy. dont get caught in prussik and the seem to mold to your skin. they dont last more than a few jobs but at about £1.28 a pair i dont mind, i buy them in bulk now so we put on new pairs willy nilly.there great for rope/knot work. if you got a mate who works for british gas he'll be able to source you a pair or two!!
  22. would agree with arbormaster that customers like a service to be done by one contractor. as a result i find i get more jobs due to people giving a price for the tree and then adding on silly figures for the stump because there a middle person to it. i try and put all my stumps together then go out on a saturday morning once or twice a month dependant if they can wait, most people are fine with it.
  23. had the same did pole climb in training and then had to explain methods for a pole rescue, there wasn't a pole at the assesment site anyway, this was a while ago though. i would recomend slings as they will come in handy in the work place.
  24. hi guys i took my 47 and found it all ok other than the machine that was hired for the course was keyless!!good old hire shops.!!thought you should also be aware though after having one site insisting i also had ipaf or national plant operators cert, some sites get a bit funny with the nptc cert. when i quizzed the companies forman he said it was about being machine specific not about the use of saw frommt he cage.has anyone else come across this. typically its just to cover all bases but if your taking the 47 ticket be aware some may ask to see your ipaf qualifications too.by the way the ipaf cert really shoud be harder, they even give you the3 answers.
  25. i'm there now didn't realise that was legislation though, had my kit -inclusive of saw strop- tested by two independant inspectors on seperate occasions and never got picked up on it, good to know ta.
