  1. fair play Sean...
  2. Why bother...Do you back up your prussic with another prussic? I dont want to start talking at cross purposes with ya Phenom....Ihave worked from a fig8 when it was tied off ( I know of 2 configurations that "lock" the fig8 set up) No reason you cant...just dont see any advantage. Infact just see the fig8 getting bastardised for a,n.other application for which there are better alternatives..?
  3. Originally posted by Yve Clark.. BBC News - Wild bees 'may freeze to death' "Conservation efforts by farmers and landowners were also thought to have helped boost numbers." I have recently acquired a tome by Oliver Rackham ( I highly recommend it) "A History of the Countryside"- In which as it happens, he makes amends in the foreword for what he describes as....."My gloomy prognosis for conservation in the 1980's...happily...." (my bad) The obvious association here is the effort by farmers and landowners in the continued wellbeing of bees....interesting and , I thought, worth the comment!
  4. Rush Meadow....( actually (triple) SSSI ) Previously sewerage from Victorian Dereham conurbation...Lets not go there eh!!! Robert.S-I saw that shot from a satellite on a diferent forum but it has lost nothing for seeing it again..quite a remarkable image! Some good photos showing up..keep posting!
  5. Messing with bandwidths...(saturation,noise, temp etc..)
  6. Bad luck mate... Do you have no recourse to getting your local beekeeper in. Here in the uk we have area contacts. Beekeepers have something to gain from collecting a hive as the bees are then theirs to keep. Im no expert I hasten to add. They will collect swarms and take them away for you. Nice people! (worth several hundred pounds more like) Its not always possible to do anything for the bees on discovering a hive. But there is no legislation that I am aware of that protects them directly ( Only roundabout regs re: chemicals etc I believe in U.K. ) The bees didnt get off so lightly mate...No offence!!
  7. I want to see numbers also...... Its not 4 work positioning..no argument there whatsoever! A straight forward descent to the floor tho' ? I want some evidence that this is beyond the wit of man to achieve 9 times outta 10....
  8. Seem to think the bollard was designed to be used packed with ice as an option...!
  9. These from a SSI I worked in E.Dereham.
  10. It was the reference to "mountainous" that got me a thinking....You snatch that shot i Scotland by any chance....? tim
  11. Mmmmm...from wiki(d) re:Evernia prunastria. "Oakmoss, also known as Evernia prunastri, is a type of lichen used extensively in modern perfumery. This lichen can be found in many mountainous temperate forests throughout the Northern Hemisphere" Oakmoss branches are typically quite a bit pointy compared... Oakmoss - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  12. (Its a coincidence that this should get posted in association with anything PITA... ) So called "Husband & Wife Tree" created by artificially conjoining the branches and stems of two trees..... Think it looks more like an old fella resting on his staff myself...?
  13. Ah...pain in the arse.... pm your e-mail and I can try send pdf of articles....?
  14. Thats funny mate....Recently posted was an assessment via testing of rope strength degeneration through the use of knots.. The conclusion....? That the ol' addage/rule of thumb that a knot halves the strength of a rope is pretty bang on the money but, get this...IT DEPENDS........
  15. Exactly the point I tried to make.... For me , it is a crisis and replanting is way behind..... Have you read any of J.Barrell's articles Hama. Teaches you to suck eggs but he makes a good point and talks from experience.... (articles appear in ISA/AA/ICF journals recently-ish ) copyright is a pita!!
  16. David- This is an excellent idea for a thread..Im only sorry I aint got nothing to post herein....!
  17. Thats too easy mate...from the current placetime moment....bracing...but with reluctance. i was recently slated for waxing lyrical re: the virtues of retaining mature specimen(beech as it happened) mechanically compromised trees for the amenity/conservation etc etc ....value. Bracing and pruning- all offering a solution in part, to a perceived problem of stability. My slayer was "peeved" with,as he put it, "angelic arbs" out to save the world blah,blah..or words to that effect. I think he should retire but thats just my opinion. He makes a good point, despite making it difficult for me to say much about anything... "Remove and replant"- The trouble is, trees are simply not being replaced as they NEED to be....
  18. "Perhaps we might even try encouraging inosculation by localised removal of corky phelloderm and the strapping of nearby limbs in place?" Perhaps....? "whats that about? Isn't all pruning wounding? " Leave em to it would be my preference....
  19. Cheers Tony...Id completely forgotten it's use earlier on , as indeed I had reading up on "exaptation" Slightly off track... "Nice wee wiki link btw, eyes loikes me science noice & simples." Did you happen to read the record breaking sum raised in support of "wikipedia"? - You are apparently one of many who value this resource!!
  20. Seat is a good idea...but you gotta think carefully about it IME....As a cutter yo'self, you'll appreciate the issues no doubt. If it aint supportive and yet restful all at the same time...i would forget it...There's always something upon which to lodge for the duration.
  21. Cracking pic mate..out of interest; inosculation: that accepted terminology with regards this kinda thing ? Is it used scientifically do ya' reckon? Tim. edit- you beat me to it Dave... Not seen this much in Ash; least not beyond sapling...
  22. This still appears to be getting viewed. Some may find this interesting...an online calculator to measure SWD with your tensiometer.... Water Moisture - Tensiometers
  23. In what context?
  24. Maybe some are interested to read this.....(the full PDF is available from the link on the right.) Geophysical imaging of root-zone, trunk, and moisture heterogeneity -- Attia al Hagrey 58 (4): 839 -- Journal of Experimental Botany
  25. You could put this on yer favorites list.../ There's a monthly newsletter. Most of this goes straight over my head but maybe it will plant a seed of enquiry within or scratch that itch....? Clay Research Group cheers.
