  1. I havent experience of the online with Myerscough. I know some folk who have completed it however. I also hear some not so good press vis a vis the level of support for distance format students although I must admit, the comments in this thread are generally positive to my surprise! It will be interesting to see what replaces the prof dip.....another prof dip maybe!!? Are you aware that the prof dip ( reworked ) is ikely to be behind schedule? ( later than sept 2010 then ) For more info checkout Treelife webpages
  2. If you also interested in the stability aspects of tree root damage...you gotta try a google using the name " Smiley" I have number of files that I can post up if youre interested. I was disappointed when I discovered there was no accommodation for data file embedding on home pages ( ie-user created "home page ")- within this website....so I never bothered posting much really after....Has this changed atall? Alls U could do was put up pics. Great but a bit limited........
  3. You might find this helpful.... Roots - Landscape plants - Edward F. Gilman - UF/IFAS
  4. "mmm academic speaking," Well you are kind for sure.....! My point, and I will stick my neck out on this forum and make a comment/state an opinion that no doubt will be refuted by many an "arboreal" observer and professional.....It may be that our understanding of the life processes and associations are misplaced Believing certain fungi/host relations are "Atypical" only limits our grasp of what is possible or indeed necessary.....Science is not anecdotal. What intelligent people do with their understanding and knowledge is however something else oftentimes......
  5. Think maybe the answer/preference may lie in the chemical make up of the woods aswell as structure issues ...( polyphenols/resins etc) Ring porous and so on. This may be an overly simplistic observation from a scientific point of view but associations are indicative of environmental status quo as much as anything else..... By understanding the chemistry/biology, perhaps we are then able to extrapolate information as to the current status and trend of ecological trends? We see fungi species being forced to move from Elm for example to other hosts as they are available..... ? Certainly we see pathogenesis/saprotropism in decay heirarchy within the same species of fungi.
  6. "....but i cant help feeling a little gutted on Alans behalf." Is there something to be gleaned from this comment or perhaps you merely refer to the "ichiatic" ( lukewarm I think!) responses from us 'ere on the forum? If the latter, I wouldnt be reading too much into mate!!
  7. David......stunning! Intervention via non-intervention. The second shot is amazing...I mean the trees appearance is amazing. I know sometimes folk criticise the threads you post but you have consistently shown your patch is a treasure trove ! Cheers.
  8. ".........and also in the true sense of my machieveli quote, I am choosing to be less than a "lukewarm advocate" of Alans phylosophies. ..." Right, so you are happy to break the law but not particularly worried that doing so yields no measurable advantage....Interesting ...!
  9. I would swear blind that the second mage is no way beech@!!
  10. Ahh...trust that many of us that touch trees on a daily basis have an intuitive awareness, if not grasp , of the " spriritual" nature of what we do, its place in the wider scheme and implication!
  11. Nice angle David.....! Quite impressive buttress roots going on there....?
  12. I think there may be something more endemically afoot with BBC than has been reported here. Arboricultural Association director criticises BBC's Watchdog show featuring rogue trader, Shaun Varey | Horticulture Week Many of us commented on the screening of a BBC production that focussed on arboriculture, and frankly we were not atall happy with the result...Good on the AA. The road to a raised profile and sense of professional belonging is no doubt beset with criticism and rebuttal.... The BBC are publicly funded and need to be transparently managed for the greater good... Having worked within the media I know that research funding need not be be so blatantly mismanaged frankly!
  13. From another forum of eminently educated and knowledgeable arboriculturists...I bring you the following nugget of wisdom..... " If it is arguably imminent then it is...if it is not arguably imminent..." I think you get the point" ?!
  14. Too much God s***....I just cant relate. Religious ideology is oppression and cruelty... The nature of the wares you peddle sir are lost to me. I wouldnrt mind seeing the paintings for real tho'...The influence of the mans childhood are apparently never far from the surface. Sometimes painfully contrived and clumsy in their construction...nonetheless colourful and naive.
  15. "This rationalistic thinking is founded in the supposition - deeply embedded in orthodox mathematics, science, governance and theology - that matter can be isolated from space. There is neither any evidence for this supposition, nor does it make consistent sense of our experience." Nice idea. Tried banging your head against a wall recently?
  16. Mmm...I wanted to tell them to stop repeating themselves.....but from the few I scrutinised, it seems ok. This the premise from which detail is derived afterall? NOS are not available at all levels...something else that needs to be sorted out. I dont much care where the line is drawn to a degree but I do wish there was some measure? ( whinge moan !! ) .
  17. Perhaps you will learn to be a tad circumspect in future then....?
  18. Dont worry about Tim...he's nothing if not left of centre. Unfortunately the govt has seen fit to instigate a re-arrangement of the qualificatiions framework. Poor timing (imo ) Its precisely during a recession that I wanted to further my professional abilities...but they are making such a hash of things....I dont mean specifically, perhaps in a more despairing " wtf" kind of a way....this govt couldnt find its collective arse with a map, two hands and a flashlight! Lets hope its worth waiting for the new framework to emerge. We can wave ta ta to being pished around and finally have a yardstick from which to measure s*** from stick...employers and students alike. On such, there is a consultation of sorts to which those who feel they are qualified ( PD holders then I guess) are welcome, look up Treelife..... This is an opportunity to help influence those modules that are condoned and endorsed, by the industry, employers alike.
  19. I should be strung up for trying to id from we got here frankly but my money would have to be on one of the following culprits.....( probably Perenniporia fraxinea ) http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/fungi-pictures/238-perenniporia-fraxinea.html AIE - Tree Fungi - Perenniporia or maybe this one (Rigidoporous ulmarius ) AIE - Tree Fungi - Rigidoporus ulmarius There are some distinguishing features. Look them up and compare with your observations mate. Anybody else got opinion ( learned opinions please,,,dont make me wish I hadnt tried to confuse the man!! )
  20. Andy, Ill be honest mate...I didnt see it. " Reading his critique then it does make you wonder how on earth trees manage to reproduce in the wild!? " I agree with this. "making planting a tree that complicated is going to put anyone off doing it." I agree with this also. I did say I thought the level of criticism was ott...but as a prof body representing the industry.....maybe he should say nowt. But that doesnt represent the industry does it mate? Why "fume" over a 2 min slot anyway? "if they did, wouldn't they talk to the U.ks largest tree planting organisation, The Tree Council, and it's 8,000 Tree Wardens? " Im not sure I would.....the point is, in two mins tv, they made a raft of errors...The money spent on research could easily have ironed this out. They didnt do it. They ballsed up a 2 min slot. Its lazy. Its unfortunate timing too imo. They get paid too much The BBC charter is thus: Educate, Inform & Entertain.....in that order. Its a two min slot. Its forgotten by the time you put the kettle on. The BBC however have a greater responsibility IMO. cheers.
  21. Dreadful picture mate....you gotta be kidding?
  22. Poor presentation by the BBC Im afraid. A little research would have gone a long way....Its easy to see how Nick got a bit carried away imo with the list of criticisms... Am I surprised by the total lack of input from the beeb? Probably not. Did they need to handle it with more respect and poignancy ( think Copenhagen) ? Deffo. Was it patronising? Oh yeah Do they pay themselves too much? You betcha... do I go on?---->>
  23. Why pathogenic? Pathogenesis is a known, as in identified, strategy"employed" by some species of fungi. The leaving or laying out of arisings in this way is not likely to have a detrimental effect on the ecological equilibrium of the area/tree whu. Quite the opposite in truth.
  24. I think you would need to consider the site carefully before setting a trap like that on the floor. It would need something like a row of posts to form an imaginary boundary. Unwary public could easily stray into the weblike tangle and....oops, there goes the nanny state alarm bell in the HSE office linked to their favorite prosecutor....I feel a case coming on!!!
  25. Not laughing atcha mate so much as postulating in public....! It will come as no surprise to learn that annosum root rot occur preferentially on conifers....It has been recorded on as many as 200 different hosts over the years. The one thing which is I think significant is the fact that infection on broadleaved hosts is likely associated with widespread infection within a locality. This because the mycellium is not able to propagate great distances in the soil, preferring root grafts as infection courts. Economically very significant ( forestry). Check out this tho' Heterobasidion annosum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia heterobasidion - Google Search
