  1. Andy as previously pointed out, Maturity can bring many attractive things to a tree business. If you want to climb then you do have to have a certain level of fitness. But also common sense and professionality too, these are qualities lacking in some younger employees. Not all of course as that would be unfair to a great number of workers. In some ways being close to 40 but not having a body that need too much care and attention can be a bonus. Are you a police officer, estate agent or traffic warden? If so, I can understand not wanting to come clean. Good luck to you mate. I hope you go for it, this is a great industry.
  2. Sorry Jamie, memory going all the time.
  3. Have you only got one hand? Am I missing something here.
  4. We pack our kits with the stuff that can save lives first, i.e. large wound dressing Tampax and sanitary products, followed by the luxury items like plasters and eye wash. (for us who forget to blink when staring up at pole saws). We were not taught to use torniquets, but to use pressure points to stem hemorrhage. We have had some really good first aid training from an ex SBS medic called Lenny. Really practical stuff if anyone is in need of a first aid course, I can send him in your direction. He does hostile environment training for news crews in Afghanistan and alike. top bloke.
  5. Top book everyone should read it! I defy anyone with a religious persuasion, to come out of the end of that book unscathed. 1 man says he is Napoleon, he's insane, 2 million people say he's Napoleon, it's a religion and we give it respect. But it's just 2 million people being deluded. 2 million people with mental illness and no one helps them. Oh golly!
  6. Is this the most common t shirt ever? Made from hemp too. So if I get marooned on an island I can smoke my clothes.
  7. Crib Goch? lots of fun running past people clinging to the hand rail. The Black cuillin ridge on skye is the king of UK ridges. If you like The goch, try the Cuillin! sorry, slightly side tracked by your mountain Avatar. Good to have some common ground between Christians and Us Atheists. It's all in the love baby.
  8. I kid you not, I saw three cubes of oak with a finished and oiled surface going for £2000 in a shop in nightsbridge. They were being marketed as occasional tables. I think marketed in the right place Steve, you could get a lot of money for the bench, marketing is the difficult part. I like it very much by the way.
  9. 2000AD prog 1-somewhere in 1980. The golden child was awesome. I'm touching that `geek' thing again here. Best shut up. I love the smell of burning witch in the morning; smells like hickory.
  10. Sounds like adult entertainment
  11. The cursed earth? Judge Dredd?
  12. The arbtalk green mile? Love and peace.
  13. Qualifications are important to get employment, the education behind them is everything, the experience of actually putting it into practce with acompany is essential. Mr Ed is spot on.
  14. Do you respect the beliefs that put gays, atheists, infidels etc into the burning pit of hell to live a life of torment? I have respect for peoples beliefs that have tolerance of all peoples no matter what their spiritual leanings. unfortunately this is a rare thing. Religion doesn't preach tolerance, or compassion, either in it's dogma or on the streets where people live. A true Christian would find my disrespect forgivable no matter how far I push it. I will talk about this disrespect, but once again the forum does not allow me to do so, so I will refrain from speaking my mind. What I find offensive in religions on the other hand is disseminated freely and actively promoted. I don't have a problem with the tolerance of religion, help thy neighbor, do unto others etc as these are the morals of any decent human. I am intolerant of intolerance. The love bit is cool, I just wish it was just the love bit.
  15. I don't think religion is respectful of those who are atheists, or don't obey the dogma the religion demands is obeyed. As such It deserves absolute disrespect. Buddhism on the other hand which is not a religion in the same way is deserving of great respect. I'm not Buddhist by the way. The public figures of the worlds main religions talk about mutual respect of other religions, but never show it at a grass roots level. People deserve respect, not their religion. I'm going to refrain from showing any particular religion any disrespect on this forum, not because it is undeserving, but because it will have my `account' suspended.
  16. Can you read it? The HGV tip is spot on by the way, we've had to put our 7.5t to one side until 2 of our guys get theirs. The bandit behind it hasn't worked for 2 months!!
  17. If your as fit as a fiddle, start at any age. My body is a wreak because of the life it's had, not because I'm in my 40s. Those qualifications sound like a good start. I hope you dont get any age prejudice from potential employers. Go for it.
  18. I will give this a try. I guess a piece of innertube wil keep it nice and compact too.
  19. Wish you were part of my crew. North essex?
  20. Ive been climbing at height for 30 years and I still scare myself. I love the fact that I'm still learning all the time from experience and other people. The fear changes as you become more confident in your abilities, I guess most experienced climbers deal with that fear so it doesn't become disabling. I often curse my careers officer from back in 81. I tend to work as fast as I can which is what really scares me, as that's when mistakes happen, even though I know this I can't help but push my limits. Oh, and having inexperienced groundies who cant avoid shockloading the system when lowering massive timber. Height per say is not frightening.
  21. Or when the LA close it off.
  22. I've seen them used a few times but only in theater. You carry such things? Are you medically trained?
  23. What's a hemostat?
  24. I've had lots of super glue at A&E for lot's of reasons not just my saw scars. For that exact reason .Am I alone on having broken 15 bones and had 3 chainsaw scars.
  25. Seeing as we have a high percentage of Frank spencers in our midst, lets have look at your scars from arb. No sharks allowed. To start you off, heres my left knee 7 years on from 020 bite. I think it's important to say how it happened and how it could have been avoided. Seeing as the HSE doesn't have much in the way of statistics, maybe this is a way for us to learn about the nature of accidents along with some gratuitous flesh and some war stories thrown in. Let us not cast any aspersions on posters as this will lead to shyness. I for one want to see the back of Mr Ed's leg. My story is pretty well documented on other threads.
