I would also try and stand it up a little prior to putting the gob in, the way you could allow it to fall to one side if you wished. I suspect the mistake he will make will be too weak a rope....

If you can find a 385xp that is a great saw, I've had mine 8 years now, still runs sweet.. I wouldn't normally buy second hand, but if a decent 385 came up I'd have it.

There was quite a bit of damage, there was a balcony over the conservatory, the roof has been damaged and the balcony is pretty fecked, the conservatory is damaged too, the frame is bent.

That was before Andrew turned up with all the cones and stuff, that "cut" was pretty weird, the tree had just snapped off about a foot below ground, there was no roof flare whatsoever. I suspect due to the ground level being raised some years ago. Big tree, was probably 80 foot.

I stopped when I was 31 and stayed off them till this year when I started again, I had smoked when in the pub a few times but other than that I had gone 6 years without. I am now 24hours into stopping again. I have tried several times to stop this year and always end up cadging fags off Andrew who works for me. I am banning smoking at work so this time I might have a chance. Sorry Andrew. -
Surely if you invoice them for 1000 and get 600 back its easy enough to work out? I find it fairly easy... well my book keeper does... you can deduct the amount you have "lost" from a any paye and NIC that you may have to make in respect of any of your employees.

If you weren't in the log business, would you burn logs or use coal?

I worked out that to buy the logs we burn at the price I sell them would cost as much as the LPG that we used before the stove and rayburn were fitted. So Maybe we'd burn gas instead, although I like a real fire and I like cooking on the Rayburn. -
How about a bit more in the way of magazine style features, I was interested to receive the latest arbmag the other day" arborage" but was a bit disappointed in the features. Maybe as well as the reviews section there could be some articles covering some of the more popular discussion topics that pop up all the time on the forum. Issues regarding the more modern chainsaws and the level of training in the industry often receive hundreds of posts, but threads can become a little confrontational and repetitive. I think there is a place for a series of well written articles covering any issues in the arb world, then we can all pick over the bones of the article in a thread later.

I just mix it all up together, soft, hard, pop, willow, oak, beech. never have any complaints.... Just learn to say no to a customer....

if I get the impression that a customer is doing that, (if they say they want a tree "cutting" thats good, if they say they want a "quote" then you need to push them on the tree, size, location etc) If its clearly a small job and its a long way off I'll tell them over the phone that it won't be less than £180 and so that way either they are serious and want the job done or they let you know there and then that its too much and save you a wasted trip. There is so much competition for these wee jobs from landscapers, gardeners and one man band tree cutters that I rarely win them, far better to be upfront with the client and let them know rather than wasting £10 on fuel and 2hours of your time.

Never found a tree I couldn't fell with my 28" bar, big ones are handy if you have to ring up a fat stem, but although I have used a 48 on an 88 and a 3120 I have never felt the urge to go out and buy one. If you get your cuts right you will be hard pushed to find a uk tree you can't deal with with a 28".

If you want to have a look at the valtra / roof mount combo I will be using it around the kelso duns area over the next few weeks. Although you could get a trailer crane and then use nay tractor you liked. -

I would go for a tractor, you'll get a lot more for your money. Mogs come into their own when you use them as a chipping unit. Depends on your budget. you won't get much mog for less than £20k but there's plenty decent tractors in that price bracket. I saw there's a valtra 6300 on arbtrader with a crane.... -
I have an oak floor from Abbey timber (01362 840251) It has been great, you can have floors in most hardwoods, we treated ours with a soft sheen polymer oil which is incredibly hard wearing, after 5 years even the hall (high traffic) still looks great. We got local oak which is knotty and pippy as I prefer that, if you want clean timber it will probably come from eastern europe. Sycamore or white ash could look stunning in the right room. The pic was just taken over ny shoulder with the laptop, If you want a close up let me know. Abbey timber are very good on price BTW.
