  1. Well, As it turns out, adapting our telescoping boom to the upper boom location won't work, due to its additional weight on the lower booms, so I am not too surprised. However, this complete setup will be able to be transferred onto the U900, if some of the other measurements check out. Thank you for looking:thumbup1: ACUF

Hi Everyone, Our current lift is great for many applications working at height in lower canopy deadwood removal of mature trees, Complete canopy access of medium trees, and other issues dealing with hazard trees, or mitigating large breaks, etc. However, I have been wishing for more height, and some ability to work into the trees inner canopy, so in the meantime, I have been considering a different lift all together. I hope to match our telescoping boom to replace the upper boom pictured on this concept image. This would achieve about 65' respectively, with a telescoping insulated boom that can still have a knuckle effect for getting into position easier, etc. The second challenge with this kind of height and design would be the need for a formal outrigger system. One of the nice things is that I would be utilizing all of that additional empty space in the rear with a bed, and plenty of places to stow equipment, etc. Another cool thing is that the entire bed is plumbed so that all of its features could tie into the high flow system for power. It has a hudraulic winch w/ jib at the bucket, an aux hyd line with a spool system off the side of the bed, etc. This is only a concept, but it has to begin somewhere. Im sure it will not fit without modifications, if its even possible to go this route. Any of your thoughts are welcomed. Thanks, ACUF
  4. Wow, Thanks for the replies, I didn't realize they were considered this way, nor that they were THAT rare over there.. My understanding was that they somehow replaced the U900 type, so still relatively smaller wheel base, so it could move around through tight spots in the city without much of a problem, etc. So mounting a crane and chipper wouldn't be the best fit? ACUF

  7. Hi Everyone, Long time since I've posted here, I sometimes forget about this valuable resource. Well, I've come to realize the limitations of the round cabs for my operation, and am moving into the larger units to accommodate the larger scale field works, and the more civilized interior and operation, etc. I'm in the process of acquiring one of the municipal type machines stateside, and just wonder if anyone has experience w/ U90, U100, or others in this rare series. It's very civilized (orange unit), has a peppy 4 cyl turbo diesel, and gets up to speed noticeably quickly. The rust is predominantly located on the bed, which is thought to have been taken from another machine before import. I plan to have my crane behind the cab on it, but would be running my chipper from the front as in the other pics I found in some searches. They feel like operating a high end Mercedes automobile of a sort that can carry implements. Very smooth and nimble. I ultimately want to know about similarity of parts between the other SBU, etc. Hope everyone is having a safe and productive year so far! ACUF

  10. Well, some things have changed, and may not be able to get the hiab 550 w/ subframe setup mentioned above. However, I am looking at another hiab 550 that will mount to the bracket i show behind the cab on the first part of the thread. That said, does anyone know how I would mount into that crossmember? someone told me it was to allow the chassis to have some flex or something. any pictures or links would be helpful. This aother 550 I'm looking at will have the normal two outriggers, instead of the entire sub frame w/ the 4 outriggers, just for comparison. Thank you for reading!! ACUF
  11. I thought these were little toys from a small scale train set or something, using stop motion photography, sped up.. Very strange light values and weird lense effect, really makes me feel like i'm looking into a live shadow box, I love it!! It looks unreal!! ACUF
  12. I like the V belt design in general, especially now, after reading this thread! I am in the process of adding my hydraulic feed system from my CH140HF to an older x3 V-belt PTO driven CH150 from Valby/Farmi. I would much rather be running the V-belt system if I have the choice. Thanks! ACUF

  15. forgot to mention the 550 includes the small square tipper bed to match, so its not a bad deal, overall, just the chipping will be a bear. niftysteve, that crane is a perfect match for the u900. i dont see any outriggers or suspension lockouts either, nice. ACUF
  16. hahaha, yeah, thats my cat, astral. Well, so, I agree, the crane is not the right one for my needs, ok. I think the trailer idea wasn't a bad on though. -Then I would need a trailer! So it was a 170 hiab. The 550 is the one mounted to the ag spec. here are the pictures i wanted to post but forgot! -also the add for the 170, still mounted to the old ford. ACUF
  17. Additionally, here are some other pics of the 550 hiab w. the sub frame on what turns out to be the identical machine i will be mounting to, 1974 ag spec u900. Last pic is the older type crane that I mislabeled the thread for the 550, and is actually the 170. This is the ad in the local paper he ran before taking the crane off the truck.. so it was operational, just dirty. cheers!! ACUF
  18. Thanks for the reply's. I agree, it is old, from the 70's and looks pretty drab. He wanted about 1000 for it. it includes the pto pump as well. He says it worked, but has blown a line to the winch, and the outriggers let some fluid. I already contacted hiab and they still have the seals, and the hoses, pins, etc, but no hard pieces. It was off a 1975 truck that he ended up scrapping, and says he will scrap this if noone buys it, so i thought would take a look. Believe it or not, I was fantasizing about mounting it out front!! -Off a schmidt plate! I figured it could be done, and would be quite a rare sort of configuration. the outriggers would pick up the whole front of the mog when in use.. my only concern was that its an overall 88" wide, about 10+ more inches than the mog as it sits. Here are a couple hand sketches I did: The last crane pictured on the red u900 is a hiab as well, and that actually may be a 550 now that i think of it. It has a sub frame that mounts to the chassis with three bolts. It has 4 outriggers as well, and the subframe incorperates a spider frame for a tipper bed, so i will still have that option, as well as a folding crane that closes behind the cab. it includes a pto centralizer that has a custom mounting of the hydraulic pump, and allows the pto option to still be available as intended (pump is mounted behind centralizer).. only issue is that its located far away, and will pay for freight, which wont be cheap, not to mention the crane / subrame itself is 5000 lbs, and 5000$!! So the older looking crane is less than an hour away, and less to purchase it than the cost to ship the other. So worth my considerations. any more feedback is very helpful!! ACUF

Hi Everyone, I am looking at a number of older cranes for my U900 and came accross a particular unit, a 550 that isnt quite the knuckle I was looking at, but this one appears to be unique in that it reaches about 40+ feet, however it only folds as the picture shows, not something that can fold up behind the cabin, etc. It appears there is already a bracket for a mid mount crane, but wondered if any of you may have any feedback, at a glance on weather or not this may fit my Unimog.   20. That is some horribly, terrible work (above), I wish there were more ordinance against this type of unskilled treatment of a aged living organism. I hate seeing this wherever it occurs.. ACUF
  21. maybe seems efficient, until you loose some fingers or a whole hand! I think this could be improved for safety, though. ACUF
