  1. Wasn't Marlborough the plaice where the great arbtalk cod war erupted from 🤭
  2. Malborough high street is like a section of dual carriage way with parking in the middle and down both hard shoulders, this church and graveyard is at one end. I've seen old photo's of rows of military lorries parked down the centre during the war so I wonder if the tree had damage caused by an enemy attack ? 🤔
  3. No chance of that , there is a gert ex church out of shot to the left 😉
  4. I did once sit down and read the hire contract and the insurance sold by them. For 15% of the hire fee they covered only the used market value of said machine, in the hire contract it was new for old and the hirer was to pay for lost hire fees until the new one was in service. Just to rub salt into the wounds the payout was ex vat and the replacement was full retail plus vat 🤪
  5. There are loads of good workers around , unfortunately very few good employers 🤔
  6. With the added advantage that they would restore some of the lost rotational mass that keeps the network stable 🙂
  7. Battolysers are looking promising for the storage of energy from renewables in the future. Basically an old fashioned Nickel/Iron Edison cell but with the electrolyte at high pressure so that the evolved gas comes off at storage cylinder pressure. When there is a surplus of energy the battery bank is fully charged and is able to feed back into the grid if needed if not it gasses Hydrogen off that is pure enough to use in a fuel cell. The Edison cell is very abuse tolerant and doesn't use any exotic or hazardous materials 🙂
  8. I'd be looking for a quiet, straight, level bit of road when I had a load on and prod the brakes enough to feel the overrun brakes come on and then let the lot roll to a halt on its own, and then nip round and look what the hitch is doing. When I was younger and dafter I would have sat on the trailer while someone else drove and observed
  9. I'm building myself a tug style narrowboat as a live aboard that will also tow a work barge. To keep it simple it'll have a separate generator with its own tank.🙂 Nice and simple, white for propulsion & red for the generator when not at work, red for propulsion and white for the generator when working. 🤪
  10. In my experience that only ever happens after I've cut a big ring and then have to half/quarter it to handle, so cutting with the grain and bunging up with noodles 🙂
  11. If you're putting anything in a watercourse it's probably a good idea to take it out at the end of each day 😉
  12. I can see the need for the green revolution due to man-made climate change but our politicians view of how to do it makes me lose all hope ☹ It's unbelievable that we are being handicapped with a legacy of high energy costs just so they can virtue signal on the world stage. China is promising to do their bit but I'd guess only once they have run out of more profitable export markets, and in the meantime coal is king 😡 It won't be long before we'll be back to sending aid to wealthier countries in the form of tree planting schemes and wonder why they view us as clowns 😕
  13. Finding the oak could be challenging, can't have been in leaf when the plans were drawn up 😉
  14. Be interested to see what you went for. In your situation those nifty gadgets that divert your surplus pv from being fed in to the network and instead heat an immersion tank look handy. Currently building myself a boat so energy systems occupy a lot of reading time 😉 I've gone Victron, like the flexability of the product and their sharing attitude to knowledge 🙂 Lithium titanate batteries suit my need as they can be charged so quickly, the cost would feel a lot less if I was likely to outlive them 😁
  15. That has crept in here recently, was a regular saying of my father who died 20 years ago. Not sure if it is me getting old or a reaction against the modern trend of people looking for a reason to feel offended 🤔
  16. Pretty academic if they died from the lightning strike or the falling debris, must have had little reaction time either way. The mother didn't seem to have any supernatural forsight, which could suggest that the sheep that leg it are aware of odd noises above and are poised for flight. If sheep have really fast reactions (and no baggage to gather up of course) then it is of little help in reducing risk to humans as it's not how humans react. The only thing to do is to prevent humans being there in the first place. If those sheep are aware of noises above prior to the failure then there would be potential to monitor typical limbs in high footfall ares for signs of impending failure by listening to them electronically possibly ?
  17. Not wishing to intrude on a damn good argument but , I was talking to a farmer about risks from trees a while ago and the subject of summer branch drop came up. He grazes sheep in the parklands of a couple of grand estates so is familiar with branch drop. He commented that his sheep are drawn to the shade of the trees but he has never had one hit by fallen limbs. Makes me wonder why, are they more tuned to their enviroment or as he suspected, humans look up ..... sheep run 🤔
  18. A sensible guess would be Cambodia so it'll Rutland water or similar 😁
  19. Forestry is exempt from inheritance tax 🤪
  20. In my totally imaginary made up story the chief constable is a keen shooting man 😁
  21. Wish I had photographic evidence for it but was too astounded to think of it, just the other day I was following the black on yellow diversion signs when I came upon a do u U turn sign in the same colour scheme. Another contractor had managed to get a closure on a diversion route and it found it quite acceptable just to tell drivers to get lost. Good thing I was in the mighty Corsa so I could turn round 🤪
  22. Go for the full rebuild on the company account, use carefully for a few years, write the value down on the books and then sell it to yourself at a low value 😉 If you dont like driving it as a personal vehicle it would sell well for a camper conversion on its new chassis 😁
  23. Do any piston engined aircraft that use avgas ever get to use Heathrow, I'd assumed it was pretty much all jet engined these days. When a gas turbine starts knocking the end is nigh 😉
  24. Probably in a running backwards race 😁
