  2. hey all, im looking for a bit of info on rigging and lowering, i have never done either and have never seen either well that not true have seen something on the railways, basically the top was taken out a tree and the lowering rope was around another branch and the top was lowered to the ground via me and another guy is this good practise? can someone explain the diff between lowering and rigging or is it just the same thing but called different names? for someone who has never done it before which rope would you recommend? which thinkness, what knots are best? what lenght of rope? im talking about basics nothing fancy just plain old using the tree to get stuff on the deck. i tried searching this info with the site search thing but got confused is there any books or websites that could help me and is there anyway to practise with out cutting a tree to bits although i could use a couple of trees at my mums house to practise on. would this stuff be good to start with? i used this as an example http://www.honeybros.com/gbu0-prodshow/HB95-R.html cheers folks

  10. JJG that pretty much what ive been doing been out climbing when and where i can, the working from the chipper up i dont mind im not expecting to start with someone and be straight up the trees as far as im concerned its all a learning curve and as long as ive got money coming in and a job ill be happy and hard working to make a good impression plus i always ask lots of questions
  11. after reading that sounds like there is very mixed views on what to pay so, as a wondering how much would you be willing to pay for someone with own ppe cs 30, 31, 38 and 39 just left college and couldnt find work? when i was hunting around for jobs everyone that i spoke to said i would be paid about 6.50 - 7 quid an hour which i thought was reasonable for someone in my situation. the hardest thing i found was that no one was interested in me because i had no experience and im still finding it hard just now but is that because of the econimy or is that just folk would rather have someone who knew what they were doing and could make them money with no hassel?
  12. the saw got passed on to me on friday mate and as far as i know theres no problem i was just wondering if the buyer had to do it or if the seller done it for you. once again mate cheers for your help.
  13. good tune but didnt really get the point of it
  14. would be happy making tea all day as long as they didnt want my sannies as well i would be happy doing that and like you said as long as i was learning and getting paid
  15. ah sorry i miss read your first post by all means if your asked to climb be on the first branch before they finish the question. the point i was trying to make and prob got no where near it was start at the bottom and work your way up. unlike what the idea college give you. ive been all over for interviews and they look at my cv and ask where i think i should start and my answer is always dragging brash and feeding the chipper and working my way up. would this be the correct statement to make to employers? or am i going about interviews the wrong way?
  16. ive been trying pretty much all of them mate and im not even getting the send in a cv im just getting a straight no now. damn i thought canada would have been a good choice. ah well its somewhere else to look at later in life.
  17. dougie mate im looking for work anywhere i can get it, i aint staying in ayrshire for the rest of my days. i would be happy to do that and damn it would be a good way to get experience with all the 2 or 3 month jobs that have been posted on the site lately.
  18. madarb i dont want to start a riot on here but, why do you think you should be up the tree?
  19. if you havent already bought it give jonesie on the site a call and see what kind of deal they can do for you mate. i would also get some spikes.
  20. when buying a new saw do you need to set it up? other than put fuel, oil and the bar and chain on it, i mean the idle speed and stuff or should all that be fine when it comes out the box?
  21. i dont want to piss anyone off on here but im going to give my opinion and some may take it the wrong way, i think working with big companies they dont really have much concern for safety and what the kits like all they are really interested in is making money winning contracts and managers driving nice big cars and what not plus most of the managers dont have hands on experience and the guys out doing the work get pissed of very quickly due to this fact. the smaller companies have a much higher concern for quality and quantity if they do a crap job they wont get recommended they do a good job they do. as for kit the smaller companies are a few guys so anything that happens is dealt with there and then if poss rather than filling in a **** load of paper work and then it gets lost so what evers broken it sits on a shelf for a year or so. the managers in the smaller companies have experience on the job so they do know what they are talking about and chances are they own the buisness so what thy say goes. i would say from what ive heard smaller companies are better to work for but harder to get into. you need to start from the bottom and work your way up, thats the bottom line. i would like to point out that i know not all companies are like this but from hearsay and what not its the general impression i get. i think that maybe the longest post ive posted on here since joining.
  22. hey all just a quick question is there any guys on here from canada? if not how would you go about getting work over there? cheers

  25. looks like a great job mate. i have one question ive seen alot of pics of you guys using cranes, my question is how do you got about getting then and doing them? well other than needing a crane and someone who can operate it. but what i mean is do you need tickets or a ticket to work along side a crane? and how does everyone know whats going on? ie how does the crane driver know when to lift, lower etc etc. is it hand signals or radio headsets?
