  1. hey guys, have got a customer whos going to be having a large multi stem syc down, and shes considering having the trunks milled to planks, i dont do milling and have no experience of it whatsoever, do any of you guys that do, work on a day rate/piece work, be prepared to travel (oxfordshire) im obviously not looking for an actual price on here i was just throwing ideas around so i could let her know how viable it may be for her. the stems are all pretty straight and largely knot free, there are 4 main stems each at around 30' before the crown, (can be cut smaller obviously if need be) any thoughts ideas on (rough) prices availibilty, or even possibility would be grand.. cheers guys, Rik
  2. yo si ive been a busy lad, those pictures of your pendants are really lovely the giant knitting needles?! id have never in a million years thought of them! have had a good look at the folksy and etsy and a couple of others and am gonna definately be setting up a shop on there hopefully this weekend! ive got a few little bits, ill get some pics up, im hoping smaller little simple things might sell well so i can make them simply and fairly quickly. id like to do a bit more chainsaw tuff but i think the postage costs may be a little big due to the size and weight so i'll try keep them local!
  3. thats some wicked info cheers! sounds pretty positive from where im sitting. may i cheekily ask what kinda things you found sold the best? (of the smaller stuff) i have so many ideas and thoughts but have no idea what people are looking for and are interested in?!
  4. Yo Si, cheers for the advice! nice idea about the carving section on my site, hadnt thought about that tbh, makes complete sense. and id never even heard of folksy or etsy, looks like ive been in the dark about these things! i shall get picturing and see what i can figure!
  5. hey guys, been thinkin for a while of what to do on these windy days when i cant safely climb, have had many thoughts, all of which seem to end up with.... nah.. thats stupid, thatll never work. my latest thoughts are trying to make my carving pay of itself a little, i carve with the saw but also i do smaller and more 'delicate' things.. wondering if anyone does/has done this and if so, can it work? i was thinkin maybe setting up a website alongside my business one, maybe local craft shows, a few of the local shops, etc? any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated as always cheers guys Rik.
  6. yep i had hear someone say that... there are a hell of a lot of squirrels around the area so i guess its entirely plausible indeed.
  7. Hey guys, was doing my best to remove a clematus from a walnut the other day when i nother that almost every single branch union had all the bark removed from the top of the union, it looks like its happened a while back now as theres woundwood peeking through from under some of them, but is have never seen anything like it before and have no idea what could have caused it? ill do my best to get some pictures this week as they would be a lot easier than trying to describe to any decent affect. if anyone has any thoughts or ideas id be well interested to hear them as im stumped. basically! cheers guys
  8. have come across many a pigeon nest when topping out BIG hedges, dunno bout anyone else but i always leave a good 'stand' all around them, keep goin back to check up and never had one 'fail' yet..... but thats just me i guess.

sorry to sound possibly really dumb... what exactly is an air burner? dont think ive ever come across that before?
  11. and i think fairly reasonably priced at just over the 100 mark depending where you shop of course...
  12. Lavoro Sherwoods ae the way to go (for me anyway) most comfy boots ive ever owned, very light, class 3, and lovely and flexible for 'delicate' climbing, but rigid enough take spikes well. i'd reccomend them over every other pair of boots ive owned!
  13. cheersguys am liking the ideas, i think personally i'd rather put in a price having read what you say about your art suffering kim, i must admit it will definately be a think i'd like to be proud of and i dont like the idea of rushing it on hourly rate to get it done so the customers happy with the price, or indeed the opposite and taking ages so im happy with the result but the customers unhappy with the price! (there will likely be lots of chin scratching!) i'll put in a price and see how we go! cheers guys!
  14. hey guys, been asked to carve an owl out of a standing trunk, fresh cut, no rot, ash. the trunk stands about 8' high and is straight, no branches, and about 18" diameter at the top... now i recon i should be able to do the actual carving ok, however i have absolutley no idea whatsoever in how to go about pricing it?? i have no idea how long something as big as this would take (im not hugely experienced in carving). any thoughts or possible ideas would be very much appreciated! cheers guys.

    What Gloves?

i like the mechanics type, of rubber dipped gloves at about a quid a pair and they fit well and snug round the wrist.. and being rubber coated they stop every bit of leylandii sap... for theat alone they are worth their weight in gold!

  18. stein for me when climbing.. but dont go for the plastic visor.. it may look cool from the outside... but after a wet day and a the odd stick getting caught.. you cant see out of the bloody things.. so im onto bolle trackers now.. picked a pair up from the show... million miles better.. no scratches.. and no dust in the eyes.. muuuch better
  19. hmmmm i fear the title and the pic of jesse asleep may not have been a good choice! theres me thinkin i dun good, now i needs to find ME a tree i can fell from the inside out!
  20. im sure theres probably threads about this already but in my poor attempt at searching i didnt come across any.. conifer dismantle did yesterday, by far the tighteest for space ive come across yet! shed just about a foot away on one side (obviously overhung that and the plastic carport next to it) and then fench just less than 2 fingers width behind it and access from one side only.. im sure this isnt anything special but a was fairly pleased with the results. a couple of piccies from the phone to give some scale (and one of a very tired brash rat/dog gettin a couple of zz's after a long day)
  21. halvsees woo! take a couple of plasters as well... there could well be a large number of puncture wounds to fix!
  22. oooooh missed that one my bad! sorry mark. what a very good idea YOU had there
  23. hows about some boots with spike attachements, wear the boots just like normal and just clip in gaffs on takedowns... cos my bootsa are comfy.. my spikes ent... surely this is a theoretical possibility?! someone clever please make these.. im first in line!
  24. a brain patterning tool that convinces customers that we actually ARENT evolutionary throwbacks that just like swingin about with big loud cutty things because we're not 'clever enough to work in an office' and that it isnt such a "simple job after all"
  25. agree with this.. play safe.
