  1. Am I missing something or is there a Tree Share Scheme on the go ? I took a Cherry down yesterday and noticed that the Clients neighbour had planted last years Xmas Tree in their garden next to the fence. It was doing well, new growth abundant. Only problem is the tree is planted 18" from the fence so when it does get more mature, half is going to be in the neighbours garden. Same at my house, the neighbour has planted a Cherry right upto my fence 3 years ago, it is now 15ft high and beginning to creep over onto my side and will when mature block out 2 hours of the morning sun. Why didn't he plant the cherry so it was in the middle of his lawn, that way when it matures it will be all within his boundary, his lawn is about 20ft wide. Aren't people inconsiderate, he could have asked me if I minded. Looks like I'll have to get the Glyphos out
  2. You mean you have actually had a stihl 361? There's me thinking your an Husqvarna man
  3. Don't know, I asked our lass and she told me to f off
  4. I know what you mean Buzz. Work for me is still coming in thick and fast at the moment touch wood. Like you say, you think you are getting ahead and something breaks or an insurance needs renewing. Tree surgery is a high overheads business, that can't be helped and it will never change. I just seem to keep in the green at the bank although I have got all decent tackle, just the landy maintenance costs are fairly high though not as high as the Mog , might do you a favour to downsize to a landy, I sat down and done some sums and I couldn't afford to run a mog on just domestic work I have HGV2 and was thinking of doing Class 1 next year so in quiet times I can do agency driving, I want some of that 38K basic wage:001_tongue:
  5. You'll have to resize your pics to 600 x 800 first Raymond
  6. If it's a sewage run off from sceptic tanks, isn't there a possibility of traces of Bleach, toilet blue, washing up liquid and all sorts of other cleaning products ??
  7. I totally agree. The only reason they don't is simply because there is always someone willing to undercut or undervalue their work. Therefore to gain employment or work they themselves have to lower prices until it becomes rediculous Just as an aside, my brother came up north this weekend, he drives for sainsbugs, 198 hours a month and his basic is £38k Makes you think doesn't it ? Tree surgery is far too undervalued IMO and needs to move along a little price wise, for the work effort, overheads and danger, it needs to be valued higher.
  8. When your waiting for the groundies to clear the branch and send your lowering rope back up, lift your helmet off your head, it's amazing how much heat you can get rid of in a short time. Take your boots off at lunch time. I suffered badly from heat exhaustion and dehydration at the beginning of summer but I seem to have aclimatised a little now. Just keep sipping water when you can (hard up the tree)
  9. Can I have some details Bob
  10. It's another thread (perhaps you should start one ) but this year things change. If you buy equipment, saws included you don't pay the income tax obviously but you also get depreciation. I'm not sure what it was exactly but my £18,000 chipper depreciated by something like £8k in the first year so in effect, your total tax saving pays the finance payments on it in the first year. Someone correct me if I'm wrong by starting another thread
  11. I'd have thought the same Tom, you can't be a "proper" Tree Surgeon without one
  12. The funniest thing I ever saw was my mate getting stung by a swarm. He came down like a rocket, unhitched and set off running up the road waving his arms around his head. Thing is there was nothing following him I love days like that, tickles you for days after.
  13. Not if you go out and buy yourself some decent tackle Matty, then offset it against tax, depreciation the works. Why do you think I've just bought a nice landcruiser , the only vehicle that will pull my MEWP or a fully loaded trailer.
  14. Why is it stupid? I always ask for a cheque, if I get cash it ends up getting spent on the wrong thing, if it's in the bank it get spent on the business
  15. I've just put my prices for half day up. I think this recession is fuelled by hype from the media, if you didn't have a telly, you would hardly know any different. Unless of course you are living by your means and in debt upto the max, in which case you will feel it big style. The ones that are going to suffer are the greedy sods who buy to let thinking they're going be property barons over night. These are the ones that have fueled the over pricing of the property market in the first place. It will help to bring property prices back to where they should be and in the long run help the market.
  16. Hell no ! The job took one and a half days instead of one, his dad got a bargain job That main stem FTR was being left 15ft high so his dad could build a platform round it with a roof, a round tree house. That should keep the little chap quiet.
  17. I have been taking down a rather large Sycamore Monday and this morning. It had been condemded by the local TO. We sectioned down half the tree and felled out two huge limbs. When I felled out the second to last limb I failed to check the felling area before making the final cut. In that felling area someone had parked an Agricultural tipping trailer, sadly the trailer was completely written off beyond repair but no-one was injured which was a blessing. The trailer owner was most distressed to see his newish trailer smashed beyond recognition. Attached are the final stages of the take down with the last photo being of the written off trailer. It just shows, be careful out there chaps. If you can miss seeing a 20 tonne tipping trailer then you can miss seeing your groundy. I will hang my head in shame, I don't know whether I will ever get over this mishap, especailly seeing the reaction of the trailer owner.
  18. Penfold I used to drink Tetleys when I was young but kept getting arrested. Someone sugested drinking lager and I never got arrested after that. That was tetleys bitter though, it used to be nicknamed "loopy Juice". If Dark mild is anything like Bitter I can't go on it again, can't afford the fines John I've done the train trick, I was supposed to get off at Guilford I think it was and ended up somewhere like portsmouth with no money.
  19. I can't stand being sober when all around me are drunken idiots, not much fun. I'd rather join in and be a drunken idiot. Soft drinks on New Years Eve. Your having a laugh aren't you?
