  1. I've done both the RFS and Cert Arb. In terms of difficulty I'd rate the RFS as the better qualification. I did mine with Billy Rob a fair few years ago and boy, did he make me work for it. If anyone is doing the RFS, book a ISA exam soon after you've sat the RFS because you'll breeze through it and have two good qualifications.(Both level two I know, but the RFS should at least be a three in my opinion)
  2. I bought the study guide, took it to the pub on a Friday and Saturday; sat the exam on Monday and passed. Watch the Tree Fertilisation section (pay it special attention)
  3. Dont mess with the Hancocks.....Or I'll turn you into a the fairy you always wanted to be...!
  4. Guess you never know where the little buggers might crop up next!
  5. Dude, I can't believe you used that tree as an anchor....didn't you see that fungi ??????
  6. You have along way to go before becoming a tree officer, and you'll need more than just a Tech Cert. Being a Tree Officer is by no means the panicle of an Arbs' career, its just one road you could possibly go down...
  7. I've got three weeks off this year, the last week will be spent doing some coppice work in a local wood. (Ash and Oak). Cold, frosty morning; get a fire going, pull the hip-flask out....can't wait!
  8. I've got three weeks off mate, so get in touch anytime!
  9. I'n not getting into the debate as to how many arbs to put into a basket.
  10. That distance you quoted is for tree opperations on the ground I think, not for MEWPS. I need to see something in black and white from the HSE. If it is the case then MEWP suppliers shouldn't be selling/fitting baskets without the mesh barrier fitted for tree work.
  11. I'm sat here at my desk writing a best practice document to go with the risk assessment and method statements I’ve written for operations with our new MEWP. I’ve read through the whole thread on the new AA Guide to the use of MEWPS in Arboriculture (an entertaining read!) One think that keeps cropping up in the guide is the ‘working with two men in the basket with a mesh petition down the middle’ thing. I accept working with two men in the basket can be useful and aid productivity (as long as the SWL is not compromised) but the ‘Mesh Partition’ is news to me! Myself and three of the lads recently underwent the NPTC training and assessment and at no point did ‘Mesh Partitions’ come into the equation. If NPTC thinks it’s safe to have two men in a basket without one, who are the AA to publish a ‘Safe Use’ manual and stipulate “It is not acceptable for chainsaws to be used in such close proximity without such a barrier” Have there been any accidents to substantiate this? Any Research?
  12. Just looked at Patricks profile, he's from London.
  13. I'll keep my eyes open....but where are you ?
  14. Thats an interesting socket there......does it work well ?
  15. Nice to have a missus who takes an interest in your career, mine would have said.....'Get that bl##dy smelly, stinky thing out of my house!'
  16. Your right in your assumption that I'm not a 'Tree Officer' . I run the Arb department here in Worcester. If I were a Tree Officer I couldn't inspect trees within the city privately as that would be a conflict of interests. Simply wouldn't be cricket. I'm lucky in that I live miles from where I work; I would never p#55 in my own pool. Tree officers and L/A tree teams can work for the private sector but we work as the 'L/A' and not ourselves.
  17. ...thought so, it was between two houses wasn't it? Hmmmm Fort Royal, conservation area if I remember correctly... Nice pegs though! Came over all 'funny' when I was them..
  18. That brings back plenty of memories…..The hours I must have wasted stood on top of mine, hand down, elbow deep!
  19. I knew that Gum....Fort Royal ??
  20. Nice colour scheme for highway work Bro……what did you do….extract all the pigmentation from those fungi samples you have stored under the bed? Least you’ve found a use for them now….
  21. Doesn’t look like a pole-saw, looks more like a lazy mother with a ’26 to me.
  22. I'll follow this thread. Although I'm L/A I do get the opportunity to survey privately, I've always turned it down till now but lately I’ve been thinking why the hell should I? Is it time to jump in at the deep-end?
