  1. Look, we are all educated arborists here. We all agree 'Pollarding' is a term used for the cyclical removal of branches from a tree, i.e. every 5 or 7 years for example. The Chestnuts in Worcester would of had the leaders removed when they were young, this would then encourage the lateral formation of the branches that you can see in the pics. The trees would then have been Pollarded or 'Re-Pollarded' every 5 to 7 years, forming the distinct knuckles that you see. Lets try not to use the terms 'Topping' and 'Lopping', if your still not sure about terminology refer to BS3998. Thankyou, John.
  2. 2.5 Tons last time I looked! Yeh is a drum, with 2 blades and approx 12" capacity. I'm very pleased with it, it was a toss-up between the Green-mech tracked chipper, or this one. I had both on demo and ended up with the Yellow Monster! hehe
  3. Oh dear, looks like I've opened-up a can of worms....I quoted - 'Principles Of Tree Hazard Assessment And Managemant'. Research for Amenity Trees No.7. Knowledge is everything in arboriculture
  4. Norway maple in Worcestershire....
  5. My new toy....Bugger is it heavy, but BOY does it eat the brash!! Its a BC1000 Vermeer, with a 3.5ltr. Turbo charged engine!
  6. The term 'pollard' means...the complete or partial removal of a young tree so as to encourage the development of numerous branches;also, forther cutting to maintain this growth pattern. Dont confuse 'Pollarding' with 'Topping', which is an awful term used, when a complete crown is removed from a tree. i.e its not a cyclical removal.
  7. Thanks Buzz. The whole job took about a week, it was so busy! Think it was half-term week..lol I left one main stem and came back the followind day, just to take the pics...
  8. These trees were neglected pollards (approx 12 years). Two were lost due to highwinds and increased sail area. Time for a trim....
  9. The two most handsome men in Worcestershire!
  10. Got up this morning and took this...just reminded me how wonderful trees can be.
  11. Just been reading all the posts...this accident has moved me more than any other! Myself and the team would be more than willing to make a donation in Scotts memory. So, so sad! John and the Worcester City Tree Team.
