  1. I do what Gunny Highway would do….Improvise, adapt and overcome.
  2. I always take a Silky up with me and nearly always use it. You have so much more control when you use a hand-saw. On a difficult/awkward branch it can be quicker and safer to take it down with a silky than using your 0200. It’s great for highway tree work……and has many advantages, one of which is its silent (think about it!)
  3. We've recently upgraded from an Arbor-eater to a BC1000. We've used the Arbor-eater for about 4 years. Maintenance was easy because of the exposed engine. Our model came with a turn-table which was good for highway work! The only problem we had was water seeping into the diesel tank and contaminating the diesel. The fuel tank was set very high (H&S nightmare to fill) If the threads are crossed on the screw-fit cap then water will ingress into the tank. If its your first chipper you’ll probably think its fine, I’ve now been using the BC1000 for about 6 months and now realise what I’ve been missing all those years!
  4. I've just come back from the pub, had a few and maybe feeling a little brave, so here goes.... What’s wrong with having a few pegs anyway ?(not aimed at you SBTC). I've noticed a few 'peg' comments before on the forum and often puzzled over them. I've done a fair few pine/conifer take-downs over the years. I have always climbed the tree first, attached my life line, then come down and started removing the branches from bottom to top (leaving pegs). Once at the top I fell the top of the tree out and then I've got some lovely pegs so stand-on while a section-fell the main stem. (They also make very handy handles for when they have to be 'directionally-thrown' into the drop zone). I should say that I only wear spikes when absolutely necessary. So come on...I've come 'out' anyone else want to ??
  5. Top job!! Watch those cones though....in the eyes of the law a cone isn't a cone unless its got its fluorescent jacket on.
  6. Good Vid Andy! We had a lad come and help us out last summer, I did the same....threw a rope up a nice Oak so he could have a go (potentially a life changing experience, start of a new career etc...) He couldn't even get his feet off the ground!! Still smoking those roll-ups I see..... ......I stopped 8 days ago
  7. Can I start up a National Ganoderma Network....? £20 membership and all the tea and cake you can eat at my mothers house.
  8. Calling all midland’ers ! Calling all you guys from the midlands, Christmas is coming, I’m starting to feel festive….and sociable! Lets get together and have a pint or two! We have 8 members who live around the Worcestershire/Gloucestershire area so I guess we should meet up somewhere around here… Any suggestions on time and location…?
  9. Good pics Danny If I were you I wouldn't bother with filter effects on the camera (save that for the computer when you get home) Try not to take pictures towards the light, (I know its difficult with a guy up a tree lol) the camera will pick-up much more detail that way....Keep 'em coming!
  10. I'm up for that! I can stumble home Anyone else joining us??
  11. Anyone want to meet up tomorrow night (Sat) for a few pints ?
  12. I think we all have a joint responsibility for the well-being and good management of trees. If a contractor is out there doing this kind of work then something should be done about it. Its public money that is being spent...used to line the pockets of a contractor who obviously does not give a dam. May I suggest you send those pics to the local paper. They will run a story, it’ll embarrass the council, local residents will protest at how their money is being spent. The council will need to be seen to be doing something about it.....i.e. change their contractor. No more damage to trees.
  13. Shouldn't you go to your L/A and tell them ?
  14. Personally I think trees of note should be published with location details. Everyone should be able to enjoy them, not just the 'exclusive few'. Are the land/tree owners worried about compaction or just managing the 1000's of tree enthusiasts who are sure to descend if locations are given ?? On a personal note, I get far more 'turned-on' by seeing a majestic 400 year old Oak on a cold, misty morning...and I don’t have to cross the Atlantic to see one
  15. Can you get some pics up of the Transit and Chipper..? Also guys, its worth remembering not to leave the keys in the van. Take them with you as you wont be insured.
  16. ...where abouts was this mate? Might pop down and see if there are any left....(women, not mistletoe)
  17. I'm not bothered if I see a Redwood or not, whats all the fuss about
  18. Speak for yourself! Not here is isn't !!
  19. No dude, in no-way by me......I don’t want to hijack this excellent thread. I'll wait till the disciplinary is over and then I'll post the details (It'll put everyone off working for L/A). lol
  20. One of my lads is being disciplined for standing on a 4 foot wall with a pole-saw....puts everything into perspective now. thanks...
  21. He's alot better now....and obsessed with food!!! He must have asked to go to McDonalds 1000 times today. Nasty little bug though...I popped into Boots and bought some of the alcohol hand gel we were chatting about, its called 'Guticura' and costs about £3 for 250ml. Think I'll start taking it into work, such a nice feeling knowing you've killed all the nasty bugs on your hands....
