Bradstock

I spent last year in Auckland, found work within a couple of weeks of getting there, found a cheap motor that did the day to day stuff no worries and drove me from Dunedin to Cape Reinga without any hassle, found a sweet houseshare in Mt Eden for a fraction of what I pay for a pokey flat here in Bristol. Found all that through Trademe, couldn't believe how easy it was for me to get started there. I was on $20p/h which I believe was a lower than average wage for trained arbs. I was more than happy on that, was never short on cash like I am constantly here and I was always out on roadtrips and doing the social thing in the city too. I even saved enough $$$ over 3 or 4 months for a 1 month trip to Malaysia. I had to come back to the UK for various reasons, but miss NZ hugely. Life really is sweeter over there and as you may have gathered, I had no money problems even on a low wage. You'll have your backside worked off, but it's proper work - the kind that has you crashed out on the sofa the second you get home - you will enjoy every second.

i did a few jobs for neighbours and friends etc. when i started out and they ALWAYS took the mick, usually asking me to log up what was agreed to be left for them or trying a little cheeky negotiation on a pre-agreed price just as i'm getting started on the job. i don't bother any more cos it just makes it awkward with them and just stick with "proper" clients.

I use a prussik, though I wrap it round my line thrice rather than twice cos it's a bit on the long side. Noticed yesterday that it was bunching up my rope rather, think maybe 3 wraps is a bit too tight. I'm going to try a blakes hitch next week for a change.

I've got a 45m Marlow which I will only use in taller stuff cos it's a right pain hauling it through countless crotches. It also weighs a ruddy ton too. I recently got a 25m Yale XTC with a spliced eye for around £65 delivered from Sorbus International - shopped around for a bit and was the best price I could find - it's ace and I use it all the time.

I'm looking for a new pair of trousers. Currently wearing Stretch Air type Cs, though I got them in medium and they don't quite fit - I'm a lot skinnier than I thought! Anyway, I got Stretch Airs cos they do a longer leg size - does anyone know if these SIPs come in a long leg? Have worn the Stihl Hi-flex before and found them rather flimsy and poor fitting for my lanky legs.

to be fair to the old boy, we only saw the finished article from one angle. i know a couple of guys that have worked for tradmaster, and they know their stuff, would be surprised if they were churning out pikey work.

Totally badass. That is what I imagine I am doing, when in reality I'm reducing a 15ft conifer hedge in someone's scummy back garden full of dog muck.
