  1. The duty of care that you owe to your self is far harder to prosecute than that you owe too others, although they will still prosecute the self employed, but you unlikely to sue yourself in the event of an accident.
  2. Surely no dogs is better for snedding??? How do dogs help when snedding??
  3. Yes I got to it though a field, not my job, I was subbed in for the fell and some of the processing.
  4. But you are also making some think its acceptable to pay people late and take on work that they cannot afford to finance and run the risk of going bust and leaving people out off pocket.
  5. Thats what I can't stand!!!! And that why I don't do business in the way you describe!!!!! If some one does work for me, they get paid, simple. I cannot go bust, I could stop working and close my business, but I would never not pay my way. As far as I'm concerned my contract is my client, whether I get paid by them is between me and them, its not anything to do with subies, their contract is with me, no one else, so I pay them straight away. I did a site clearance job where the builder went bust, my subbies got paid (at the end of the week when the job was done) even Stumpbusters got paid, because they were working for me. But I got nothing, that job cost me time and money, but thats business. Subbies make me money, I get more out of every job than they do, so why should they subsidies my business by taking late payment???
  6. VERY WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF has striming got to do with tree work??????????????? .
  7. Thats nonsense, Tesco is a business, but they expect my Mrs to pay before she leaves the store. If people need credit they should go ask the bank. it is just plain wrong to expect subbies to finance your Co by taking late payment. What happens if the customers don't pay??? you still need to pay the staff regardless!! If the Co does not have the funds or bank credit arranged to cover the cost of doing the job, they should not take the job on!!!!!!!!
  8. It would seem strange if a 16 year old can drive a tractor on the road, but not use the PTO
  9. Are you thinking of leaving him to work alone?? If so, this is where you may have a problem, lone working with potentially dangerous machinery is pretty much out lawed now. Its all about the duty of care that you as an employer have to your employee (even the self employed) There as a forester on an estate who was laid off by the estate, because they could not afforded to have a second man with him, the estate consulted the HSE and were told that anything happened they would be liable.
  10. Spot on Tom!! If I had cut the buttresses of this Beech it would have flatend the neighbouring house!!
  11. Did the Planes on Wednesday, I bought a couple of paper masks (the ones with the valve that lets you breath out freely) and so goggles. The goggles were OK for the first 20 minuets, but as soon as we were sweating they steamed up so badly that it was dangerous, so we gave up with them. Our eyes were a little itchy by the end of the day but nothing major. The masks worked very well and we were both fine, with no coughing. At lunch time you could see all the hairs stuck to the windscreen and in little piles on the wipers. Todd was fine about wearing the mask and goggles, but was more than a little alarmed when I told he that we had to "blow each other off at the end of the job":001_huh:
  12. Very interesting!! They clearly know exactly what they are doing!! Not sure I could work with that upholstered plank stuck to my bum.
  13. If the stove is certificated and the timber dry, there is no problem
  14. We are talking about a few simple hand signals here, do people really not have time to run through them with a new groundie at the start of the job?? Is this not something that would be done whilst discussing the job and doing your RA?? In the USA the trees are often 200ft+ so hand signals will be far more important, generally my groundy can here me from 60ft up.
  15. I'm not sure the guy selling the chipper even knows they are taking the mick, he may just think their spelling is even worse than his. The reason I say this is because when you sell on ebay you decide if you want the questions you receive to be displayed on the listing, the fact that he has makes me think he has not taken it as an attack. It could even be that the questions are genuine and those asking are just very poor at spelling. My spelling is terrible and I spell check every post I make. I had forgotten the humiliation of my poor literacy, with advent of the PC my life is much easier, but the other day I was doing new city and guilds unit and part of it was written, I felt very embarrassed by my written efforts.
  16. Please tell which model of tranny will carry 2 ton?????????? The very best you will get is around a 1 ton, but most are less than that. I know most tranny owners put 2 ton on theirs, but it ain't legal.
  17. Its just a bit of banter mate Just laugh along and have some fun, then do your own thing
  18. Be careful, you really don't know who your talking too. Tom is a pretty experienced Forestry faller and can fell, sned and stack a staggering amount of timber in a day. People are only pulling your leg and mean no harm I've know a fair few production fallers over the years and don't know any who had double dogs on a small saw.
  19. Me and Todd removed a very small one a few years back, it was in a row street trees we were removing, we coughed like mad far a short and then were fine, but it was a very small tree. I'm going to put in a price that will cover buying a couple of decent masks and goggles. Things are tight round here just now and they are getting two prices, if I'm not very keen with my price I won't get it, so I think I'll let this one go. It in on a road closure, were other work is being done, so I can't wait for rain. Thanks very much for all the input guys, its a big help!!!
  20. This really is "turning swords into plough shears"!!!!!!!!!!
  21. I have them at the end of most days, I can blow my nose and send you the hankie if you like
