  2. I suffered from back pain from an old footie injury..physio did nothing for me nor osteopaths ecte. Got in a climbing harness last year and hey presto back problem sorted..weird that! Just needed stetching ,Bring back the good ol medieval rack for a good bit of back strecthing:D
  3. Just read up on this ( in stouts and winter). Its a bacterial infection in the pheloderm or new bark and it rarely infects the cambuim killing branches , although this can happen. Not much control to be done on it, except target prune dead branches. Thanks for the photos Vduben , found this intresting.

  8. i agree with the pollarding of the willow, only a third thou. I dont want to top it 100% thats a crime against nature in my eyes and Shigos:cussing:. I will suggest the complete felling of the ash to the landlady and the council..the trees are in a conservation area. The willow makes good biodivirsity..lots of insects on it for the birds. Cheers guys...even the non proffessionals
  9. hello all. In my back garden we got a Salix x chrysocma and Fraxinus excelsior. I have suggested to our landlady that the Ash needs to have one dominant stem not 3 as in the pictures. The reason i suggested this is that in my opinion the co dominat stems could be a future hazard due to weak forks in ash and secondly the tree will incorprate itself into the fence in the future. the centeral stem has what looks like a frost crack so i would remove this stem. The willow has had pollarding before and blocks the car park on the right. I know you can pollard this species, but the tree has got some white rot and im concerned that more pollarding will increase its decay. Plus i dont want to pollard it all..maybe just do the branches over the car park. Im still a student and want to know what you proffessionals think. Thanks.
  10. I will second that. Think il get some books by matteck i.e stupsi and other good tree mechanics books..nothing beats a good book and some indepth study. Just sad i cant have a go on your fractometers and the like..anyone used one of those? What they like and how accurate are they?
  11. Cheers Tony , didnt know it was an assement not a training course. I know what to basicaly look for in hazard trees , hazard beams , supflourous swellings ,cracks ecte. maybe i know more than i realise. read some books on it Matteck ecte. Thought it best to have a certifcate to have incase i go for tree inspection jobs in the future.
  12. Does anyone know of any decent courses on tree hazard inspection. Sadly i cant do that part of my Arb course next year so i got to do it independantly Got to get out and do the work thing.
  13. OUch!!! Thats put new light on it for me.
  14. Could it just be the cambuim has a bacterial infection effecting new phloem cells being produced.(scratches head lots).
  15. A guy at college was saying that the health and saftey lot (bless their little cotton socks) are disscussing Arborists tree climbing using two anchor points at all times. Something about them trying to cut down on accidents. I dont know if anyone else has heard this or is just rumour control? Do they mean ascending the tree or just moving around the canopy..i dont know.
  16. love that knotwork tree..want one like that..already got 3 but nothing to do with trees. I cant see copyright on your tattoo..may have to have one = ).
  17. I would leave it..maybe get rid of some dead decaying branches. The energy dynamics of older trees is not as high as younger ones and i think they cope less well with reductions and reactions to stress. leave the old girl if there is no hazard or target.
  18. cheers TimR. The fluid thing sounds like the way to go. My tutors seem to look like oragutangs up there..hope they dont read this..im sure they would take it as a complement anyway!
  19. my tutor did mention going for it and tried to get me to try and push off with my leg and grab a branch and squirrel out. Couldnt do it..didnt trust my leg to give me enough power to get out..try again next week. Il keep doning what i been taughtand using the climbing sysetem i been taught..but have taken all your coments on board guys..thanks.
  20. Thanks guys. Whats a vt knot? sorry about the ignorance..still got loads to learn. I understand the high anchor point and a clear climbing line free from obstructions. think were not allowed to use pulleys yet..dont even know what they are!
  21. Can anyone offer some advice for a student? I have only done limb walking twice. I did it on friday and was struggling with the idea of using one hand to hang on to the branch and adjust my klemheist knot at the sametime as i moved out along the limb. My klemheist knot didn't move.well with one hand on it..if at all! My tutor said it comes with practice! What do you proffessionals do? Thanks a lot.
  22. Thanks all for your posts. The subject got me thinking about trees adaptions to urban enviorments. Thanks all for your input. I must learn to think about below ground as well as the crown. Agree wholeheartdly about planting trees in the right place. im still trying to get my local council to plant trees in the correct place.
  23. Sorry student with question. How vunerabale are trees that are next to buildings at risk from wind blow? I know that if trees are felled at woodland edges the remaining trees if left open at edges are more at risk from wind blow. I know that wind increases in urban sites with tall buildings.Would a tree survie if the building it was next to was taken down?
  24. Hi BigA, Stowmarket just off the a14..5 mins from Stevebullman we found out yesterday.Seems to be a few of us in Suffolk.
