  1. I made the mistake of a B&Q special and never ever again. Saws like the Makita DCS430 aren't bad. More of a farm saw than a tree surgeons/arborists saw but mine logs very well and is coping very well so far
  2. Everything burns well if dry. Personally I think lime burns well provided it is well seasoned. Gets a poor press as does Plane Tree. Both have kept us warm in the past
  3. Makita recommend if running high quality Makita syntetic oil a mix of 50:1 if using a lower quality or not Makita branded they recommend 40:1 if the petrol has an Octane rating of less than 95 they recommend 25:1. I run on 40:1 with my Makita. No problems yet but its only 2 months old.
  4. I'm no expert but I'd be pushing for a crown lift and if you must a bit of a crown thin. reducing it in height won't make much difference to light in my oppinion. All it will do is encourage it to grow back to that height and with thicker growth
  5. I know 30% is a bit much but what can I do other than wait another few months. I split mine before testing adn its generally 30% towards the middle of the log if I test at the end its usually 20 or less. I'm still new to the whole business of firewood and trees for that matter so have to use whats available at present just to pay the rent
  6. The stuff I burn at home is generally about 30% which may be a little high but to be honest it burns well with little hissing. So in answer to your question stuff I sell is generally around the 30% mark as a general rule
  7. I do that. Tend to bring a bag down every few days, about a third of a cube, from the top of the garden. I must have a few hundred pounds of split wood at the bottom of my garden now.
  8. chock em with bricks. I've nearly ran myself over when the handbrake wasn't on enough. If not good with 2 tonne of landrover rolling towards you
  9. my trimmer does that if you don't let it warm up. The joys of 25:1 mixtures
  10. If your doing 6 hour days and your groundie is getting 35 quid a day at 16 he ain't doing bad I was on about 4 pound an hour when I were a lad
  11. Maplins about 20 quid. Accurate enough to let you know if the timber will burn or hiss
  12. I could have that back on the road in a week no problem.
  13. There does look like there could have been some rot in that there trunk. Maybe just maybe its been cut back so hard to try and give it some life or could be someone has gone mad on the Health and Safety and said you need to reduce the canopy sail and its been taken a bit too literally. I don't like it but chances are you'll get regrowth in effect its a very hard pollard. Just doesn't look pretty and isn't really the way things should be done. Other thing is it could have been a fell took the job on and not having a big enough saw hacked it and ran
  14. I was watching a mixed lot of birch and conifer on ebay the other day approx 1.5 tonnes of unseasoned rubbish and it went for 47 quid. At a tenner it would have been worth a punt. The stuff thats in the ad there looks like ruubbish to me. I'd bet he got a cheap price by saying I'll get rid of the waste.
  15. you should be able to get them to lock up. I can get my 1961 land rover with drum brakes to lock all 4 wheels. Brakes are a pain but if you've replaced everything other than the servo and master cylinder and flexis it has to point to one of these. MC failure would normally be if you are getting a soft pedal which pumps up with use. The other thing to look at would be brake pedal height and whether there is any adjustment on the master cylinder. If may be possible to alter the position of the pedal on the push rod and this will give you a bigger amount of fluid to push through. I've got a 90 110 workshop manual on file somewhere I can dig it out and have a look and send you the relevent sections if you need them.
  16. I know I've asked before seeing if anything would be available on a theoretical basis but now I need in the true form of requiring wood for processing into firewood as I now have sorted my storage/processing yard and its looking rather empty and sorrowful. Its between wigan and st helens. I can collect but it would be only small amounts i can collect as I only have a short wheel base land rover and currently no trailer. Delivery to the yard would be better for me though. I don't mind if its ringed or in lengths. If you want to get rid for free then fine if I need to pay that is also fine. I'm not desperate honest. Any help in the form of wood will be duly considered. Any suggestions etc will also be taken.
  17. Depends in what context two handed working means. Does it mean that the machine has to have a control that is operated in such a way that you have to operate the controls using two hands or something else. Unless you see the whole document you never know. Depends also on wording like should, must etc
  18. I've seen the council tree gangs out at 7:30 round here before.
  19. not sure on the business rate front as yet been trying to pin down a yard first. I've looked on the business rates register and it comes under part of a yard that is already rented out as its a sub let. Will probably be all complicated but I'll suss it out in the end.
  20. I've possibly found myself a bit of a yard to work from. Primarily to sell firewood. I've been offered an area about 30mx30m in a secure location for 20pound a week. Concreted and with good access. Does that sound like a good deal? I know there won't be much return to start waiting for stuff to season etc but if I can get this part up and running I could probably make a reasonable go of it. There is also chance to expand if I want to from what I can gather.
  21. I may also be in the need for more wood not to far from Wigan/Greater Manchester if there be anyone needing to shift it. I've not even started advertising I plan to sell firewood and have people asking. Only problem is my supply is limited. Further afield if delivery can be arranged. I only run a short landy so have limited carrying ability.
  22. if you can't do it yourself try D Roberts Heating in Coppull. We got our fire from there but we fitted everything else including the whole heating system
  23. I paid mine in one go as I saw the interst payments. You can phone them up and pay extra if you have the extra to pay. In my oppinion the quicker you pay the things off the better. When I first got mine the interest was only 1.3% then gordon brown decided that 4.5% interest would be fairer. Interest on 3grand went from just over a quid a month to about a 5 quid
  24. Quickthorn Thats the kind of thing I'm looking at transporting once I find myself a regular supplier.
  25. Just a query regarding haulage. Looking a bit closer at possibilities for selling firewood as a commercial venture I was wondering about haulage and cost if I were to buy in from somewhere else (I don't generate much useful wood) and to get dropped at a yard of my choosing. I've seen one company that will do a 6 or 8 wheel tipper for 32 pounds an hour only catch is a minimum 10 hour hire with driver. Could in theory carry 20 tonnes max. Tipper was what I was thinking but any other suggestions. I'm seriously thinking of giving it a go if my yard space comes off
