  1. Horses for courses, i used the lock jack for a good few years and its great. Then tried the spider jack and its brilliant. Both take time to get used to and you'll get more from them if you're an experienced climber but i guess the same can be said for hitch climber type setups. The thing i would say about them is that you need to persevere with them, it took me about 3 weeks to get used to the spider. As for value for money, i would say that they are a justifiable expense but you need to spend money on a good friction saver device as well:thumbup1:!
  2. ive been running the vermeer s600tx for a couple of years and can honestly say its one of the best bits of kit ive bought. Like some others i debated about buying it for quite a while but had it on demo for a week and it never went back. i will say though that there have been problems with the hydraulic pumps, both have been replaced on it now. Vermeer were very quick to sort out this problem and there was no cost to us so i will highly recommend thier customer service. The machine with the stanard bucket and the timber grab(which was recently stolen) came in at around 13k plus vat from memory.

    stolen grab

Thanks Tom, i'm afraid its all to common these days. The really annoying thing is it is normally kept in a far more secure place but had just been repaired and was left in our yard. Weve checked with the local scrap yards but no luck asd of yet, prob in the back of someones shed cause they dont know what to do with it. Thanks agian hope alls well with you, Cheers.
  4. i use a spiderjack with tacyon, used a lockjack previously on that rope. I prefer the spider as it self tails better than the lockjack and is brilliant for footlocking.
  5. Hi all, not really posted much on here before but am a keen follower of many of the threads. Unfortunately we've had a visit to our yard at Oake near Taunton in Somerset and the thieving scum have taken a timber grab attachment. The said grab is an attachment for the Vermeer s600tx (tracked skid steer loader). It is very distinctive, basically it looks like a timber crane grab with a plate to attach to the loader, it is predominantly yellow with Vermeer written on it! I'm trying to find a picture and will upload one when i can.Info from Vermeer is that there are not many of these in the UK. It was noticed to be missing last week, as we don't use it every day and was not with the loader, we don't know for sure what night it was stolen. Any info would be greatly appreciated as i really wont it back, thanks Colin.
  6. Hi Al,

I thought for sure you had to be the same person. Fred is still around although i have not seen him for years, i spoke with Andy Pipe (you may know him as he used to work for Durstons) the other day and he said he was not so well and that the doctors had told him to quit smoking. Stan sadly passed away some time ago.

How long were you at Durston woodlands , and did you work with Gordon Gaston? Fred was forever telling us how amazing Gordon was, i never got to see him climb but i know i have worked on many a tree that he did. It never ceases to amaze me how much things have changed and keep changing in this business and that how this work is still addictive not matter how long you do it.

David lives in Northampton now and he works as a laser production engineer, he really enjoys it.

Hope that house at Ash priors isn't too close to your mums house, seems to have been a hell of a lot of houses built at the cost of some good gardens and trees in recent years!

    Colin.

  7. Hello Al.I think we may know each other (vaguely possibly). Let me explain, i went to Taunton school and left there in 1984., after a couple of years doing various jobs mainly farming i ended up working for a company called Durston woodlands. The foreman there called Fred told me Alistair Cormack had worked there for a while before me. I remember someone called Alistair Cormack from school and have always assumed it was the same person who worked at Durstons with fred and Stan. If you are that person you may remember my brother David as i think you may have been in the same year. Any way my name is Colin Inder and i run a Company called Arboricare Ltd down here in Taunton and just thought it was interesting. If you are that person i would be interested to know, if youre not sorry to bother you. Cheers Colin.
