  1. looks ok how does the cambium saver sit in the crab does it seem to sit ok or pull a bit at the sides and distort the eye of cambium saver and does it touch gate mechanism. what about taking crab off and feeding cambium saver end through saver big ring then putting crab back on if not retrieving it?? just a thought does the pulley sit nice in the bottom of the crab or does it slip to one side. If a proper hms it should be ok i am a fan of ovals for both ends to sit nicer. But as i have previosly stated i have been on site twice when the crabs have been found to be open or faulty and personally do not think the pulley makes enough difference opposed to using a standard cambium saver to warrant ME having a crab up there that i often can not see and check a pulley by itself will have less friction than having a ring next to it. Hope this made sense as i know what i meant but sempt to go of on one feel free to comment or disagree carabina choice and suitability is very often overlooked as to how they load and sit most of us just use whatever we have and not think about whether we would be better with an oval offset d hms ect
  2. that damage was caused by the half the tree falling over in the winds nothing to do with me

  6. rock climbing ropes melt very easily and quickly
  7. good point there seems self employed have more deaths ect but only the employed have reportable accidents but i would say most self employed would either not know what riddor was or were too frightened to tell them whereas employed folk especially large firms and LA will report through riddor
  8. i am not saying it,s a must but i felt as a loler bod that i wanted to learn and understand splices and rope construction and differences between core and sheath strengths ect and i wanted to be able to splice but i do believe there is a limit to what a loler inspector could ever know i am not a specialist welder and can not sew or forge metal but i can spend a lot of time reading reports and reviews and improving product knowledge and working out suitable systems ect ect
  9. was it really worth saving did not look to me worthy of the work involved to leave a tree that is in decline and can i say not the prettiest specimen i have seen considering the location and also to echo others comments you must have long arms for that strop
  10. :001_tongue::001_tongue: thats a good one what about mutility arborist
  11. that was what i meant in the refresher/ assessment splices could be done with witnesses

    Rip offs

i often feel we as tree surgeons get ripped off but i have never put it down to the dealer as if i believed a dealer was ripping me off guess what????i go somewhere else i do believe that somewhere either the manufacturers or importers or too many middle men think we are made of money I Have wanted a pair of stretch air rec trousers for general wear but £120 plus vat ............can not do it
  14. i have been splicing about 7 months and in that time i have spliced approx 60 ropes admittedly not all were successes but learning from mistakes is all part of the process i have destroyed several of my splices and found them to distort or break at very high strengths definatly in excess of what a knot would fail at what i wondered about re been competent was 1 Go on a splicing course 2 Go away for several months and splice a load of rope 3 Go BACK and do another splicing course/assessment to make sure you were not making any mistakes or little points 4 splice a few sample splices that were then sent for proper destructive tests and if they broke beyond a minimum strength you then were deemed competent to splice either that exact rope ie blaze or could it be that you could do all yale or all double braid When i started out in trees you were taught on your climbing course to splice and you spliced everything inc prussicks now that was 3 strand which was relatively simple but then we moved onto multiplait which was a lot harder and tbh a 16 strand is not that hard when you know how So why could we splice then and not now also imo splicing is safer than tying knots as they can come undone and it is so easy to clip into wrong part of a knot or incorrectly tie the knot in the first place
  15. he is definatly anchored twice which is recomended and best practice although it is not the best way imo ideally i would chocker climbing line so that a it can not split and squash you b if needed you could descend easily c if god forbid a rescue was needed it would be so simple

  19. the best thing you can do to prepare is download the assessment schedule from NPTC website and learn it and get someone to test you on all the criteria and turn up with an open mind to the course and try to relax and enjoy the course and try not to get worked up about the assessment
  20. i bet it is supprising what you can fit in wheelie bins if you wanted
  21. To be totally honest i am sick and tired of posting views facts and advice on this subject to be ridiculed and mocked. When will folk start to take legislation with the interest and respect it deserves (that does not mean comply)just be aware it is there and what it means to us.IT IS THERE TO HELP AND PROTECT US
  22. not necesarily could be fine dependant on type of crab and type of pulley problem with crabs as top anchors imo is they can end up loaded wrongly and get caught against the stem and your not close enough to keep an eye on them could you change crab to a mallion ??? and also sometimes pulley and ring do not always allow pulley to run easy and true and a bit of rope damage occurs pic of set up or list of components would help but how exactly you use it and what diameters does affect how it runs p.s i have had 2 instances when i have been on site and crabs used with pulleys have been found open or gates damaged whilst been in use and i personally now will not put myself in that position my life is worth more than buying a proper tool for a proper job if i use a pulley in a cambium saver it has been designed to be used that way or i just use a cambium saver as standard
  23. is it true you nicked stufff out of my snap box

what makes you think its any different latest regs to change climbing are the working at height regs and they specifically say they apply to everyone both employed and self employed
