  1. I still think the chipper mounted on a pickup with a tipping trailer has potential.. It would definitely give you a better legal load. I have only ever seen that timberwolf on the landrover and there was a a greenmech shredder on a sprinter i think..
  2. Does it make any real difference if you have to charge 20%.. Surely most pubs are VAT registered so will claim it back..?
  3. Even the bonus for productivity has issues as guys may cut corners to get a job done etc.. I quite like the board of shame idea... Although it is a bit negative and might be difficult to enforce...
  4. We have a young lad, son of one of our employees who wants a position as an apprentice. He did work experience with us and we have him in on Saturdays some times to help out. He is keen to be taken on as an apprentice, as he is a good worker, I would like to help if we can. But to be honest I don't want to be stuck with all the training costs... again.. What is the best way to go about it. Does he need to be connected with a college? Is there funding available to me as an employer? Anyone taken one on recently, as I believe things have changed?
  5. I would be interested in any system you come up with as I have wanted to come up with something workable for a few years. As most employees don't care about kit like most owner operators. I don't think it is right (or legal) to charge employees for breakages. We break stuff in this game sometimes. I don't think leaving it a year and saying your christmas party aint happening is incentive enough as it is too long between breakages. My thoughts were coming up with a figure (based on how much is spent monthly on repairs though breakages) then any breakages are taken out of it. If there is anything left ant the end of the month the bonus is shared out.? My issue is that it will make the guys less likely to be honest about breakages..
  6. We have a 130 but its too small for your main truck if you do general domestic work. You can probably legally carry more then a transit as I imagine it weighs less..? It cost more than any of our other vehicles, is the oldest, least comfortable to drive and carrys the least, it is therefore generally the back up vehicle, but when you need to go off road which we do every now and then it is invaluable. It will also last forever in a triggers broom sort of way.
  7. Find someone with a quadsaw or similar.. All cuts to BS3998.. [ame] [/ame]
  8. Never heard of growth regulators used to slow growth of trees.. What does it cost and how often do you need to treat a tree? and is it really a good idea..? Paclobutrazol: Sometimes what you don't know can hurt youThe Paclo Truth | Paclobutrazol: Sometimes what you don't know can hurt you.
  9. Full time position available for the right person..
  10. Our old TD5 is starting to rot.. There are holes starting to appear in the chassis. Do people think it is worth a chassis swap.. Its a low mileage under 100K and we only use it as a back up or when 4x4 is required.. Is it worth spending £1850 on a galvanised chassis, and another £2000 to fit it..? or should we sell it and let some other mug do it..? It is a 16 year old vehicle.. That lets face it was never very refined... But it is forever repairable.. Can you get a non galvanised replacement chassis? I could not find any on a quick web search.. If so are they cheaper? I know a galvanised would last for longer but the standard one has lasted 16 years and I reckon that would be plenty long enough for me.. Opinions ..
  11. Its not the value that caused me and I would guess the others, who replied comments.. It's the thought that someone thinks its a days wage.
  12. It might, but I don't see a big issue of a trailer.. Unless you need to tow something else..
  13. Having a 4x4 on the fleet is often usefull. But always they are also a bit of a compromise. We used to have a land cruiser van that was used for towing and quoting duties. I loved it but worked out it was costing about £1000 a year more in fuel then a small van would.. We currently have a vw caddy which works ok to tow the hb20 and small chipper if needed.. but We have a 130 tipper so have the 4x4 covered. We also have taillifts on a couple of our tippers so you can on small jobs load it on the back that way. Vehicles are always a compromise and the best option one day might not be the next...
  14. Canopy Tree Services need some temporary tree workers, possibly leading to permanent ground or climbing staff, full, part time or free lance positions available. We are an AAAC based in Draycott DE72 3NX - bus routes from Derby and Nottingham.. Send me a CV: [email protected] 0797 032 5361
  15. I am fairly sure I quoted to pollard that tree
  16. The flat rate works really well, we have had to move to the full rate and it is a PITA.
  17. Same with birds, you can shoot pigeons, but don't disturb their nest..
  18. We have a school site with a strip of land consisting of a neglected hedge and over grown area, The residents and school want to reduce the hedge and cut back the brambles. There is however a badger sett in the area, I have yet to see the ecologists report but apparently it says works can be undertaken up June until December. Anyone had experience working around badgers.. ?
  19. Last time I was struggling to get low skilled staff to get hedges trimmed for a contract I used Indeed.co.uk I put a free add for 2 weeks temporary employment and got loads of replies. Some better than others.. Some foreign but most not.
  20. I remember (I think from on here) someone had a document they had produced to do with tree surveys for scout camps. I can't find it.. but have been asked to do a hazard survey at a scout camp and thought it might be useful. Can any one remember the document and point me in the right direction? Cheers
  21. I think there was a lot of pain after the subsidies were cut, with lots of farms going under. Not necessarily a bad thing in the long run however.
  22. It is stable but if you try to lift something too heavy it lifts the tractor..
  23. No idea..
  24. We have one that we attach to a tractor.. at full reach 5.1m it can lift the tractors wheels off the ground if you are not careful.
