I have such a soft spot for LDV's. Must dig out and scan the pics of mine.

    the subaru story is hilarious.
  3. Actually, half tracks died out because the tracks were made from canvas or steel. With the advent of modern kevlar composite tracks, enabaling a treaded track to be used, I think you will see a resurgence in track technology. That truck would be immensly usefull in agricultural industries, where its 40mph on road ability, terrain ability and multi body use would be a winner. As for breaking in snow etc, (whilst on the dolly) I'm sure the dolly is breaked, and connects in the same way as a trailer. Anyhoo, the fronts would do 90% of the breaking. Having run 8x8 forwarders etc, I still reckon the terrain ability on this thing is impressive. Certainly beats the 8x8 trucks Ive seen...
  4. Whatever you say, it was very impressive in the filthiest of conditions.
  5. Rupe, I was thinking the same thing re: cabstars, transits LDV's etc:D It only has 1 engine, like a conventional truck. It uses front wheel drive only when its running on the road.
  6. Look at any biomass chipper (where efficiency really counts) and they're all drum chippers. drums cut with the grain, not against it. Similar weight, but probably more compact. Our disk chipper was very similar. Probably closer to a schliesing than a TW or GM. Heavy flywheel and two heavy knives. IMO, what makes a chipper work well is its ability to crush and drag in material. for that you need a big infeed opening, bigger than the capacity of the chipper, allowing it to ride over and crush awkward forks, knots etc. so we have a huge top roller with 400cc hydraulic motor, and a smaller bottom roller. I'm hoping that with the Kohler 40hp engine, we can have it weighing about 600kgs. Thats if I ever get round to finishing it. Too busy trying to earn a living at the moment....
  7. oh, i'll let you know eventually..
  8. Thats the one. we built a towable and a tracked version, but we felt that we'd exhausted the possibility's with a disk chipper.
  9. Prices anyone?
  10. I would kill for one of these. This thing is flippin' incredible. Puts a Unimog very firmly in its place as a toy. 22tonnes capacity through the worst conditions imaginable... [ame]http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DGIvijrLkaw&feature=related[/ame]
  11. Yes, but I would prefer not to smash the trees behind. Might yet do that though....
  12. My mate has one chris, the build quality is light years ahead of Landrover, he gets nearly 40mpg on a run. I agree with you on the off road bit.
  13. How much are they?
  14. I've heard nothing but good reports on them Lee, particularly fuel consumption. Like you say, its more Jap than Ford. After all your Nissan is built in Spain....
  15. Pics...
  16. We do a lot of work for a large estate on my doorstep. Usually its removal of hazard trees, dangerous limbs, that kind of thing. Recently we've had a spate of perfectly healthy trees windblowing. I thing mainly down to the weight of a wet canopy in summer. Now these 2 I've been watching for a while. I suspect there is something amiss in the root systems, as both are showing dieback in the tips and the beech is going very yellow. They overhang a fairly busy junction, so I've decided to remove them. Trees are in a conservation area, but the local TO trusts my judgement. SO... what would you do? and because it gets such a lot of discussion, how much would you charge to fell these two?
  17. I think we will do a basic spec diesel machine for £9995, but it will be a while before we release them. Prototype development is an expensive business:thumbdown: Heres a few pictures. We've built it with 2 aims - Heavy duty build, and ease of service access. All our early prototypes were disc chippers, but we junked that idea in favour of the drum. It has to many advantages to ignore.
  18. Lovely job mate, but I would'nt even half fill that box for fear of overloading...
  19. No, I'm a tree surgeon with a bent for engineering You do surprise me.... Thanks for the patronising advice. Would you like to pat me on the head whilst your at it?
  20. Price would be a big factor in favour of the TW. with the Euro so high, german machines are getting even more ludicrously expensive. Is the little TP a good machine? The TP200 of mine is quite neat. I do like a turntable on a chipper.
  21. How much do you want? I've got 6 engine options for it.
  22. I'm the UK importer. I sold all the Coneheads in Ireland. Who's was it - CCTM's?
  23. And you sir, are a prize A1 Moron. I've probably forgotten more than you will ever know about chipper engineering.
  24. Bob, could'nt agree more on the knife issue. If you do no more than keep sharp knives in your chipper, you'll add YEARS to its working life. On heavy chipping operations with the big Conehead, I used to replace / turn the knives after 4 hours use. Could do it in 6 minutes after a while....
