In regards to stumps, I see a few that the council/sub contractors have left from trees at roadsides, mostly whitebeam, and the stump height varies from about 1m to ankle height. Is there any reason why there is such a variation or is it just a time is money?

Yeah I should have said, its a weed around here but I really like it as it cuts and splits easily, dries quickly and even if it doesn't kick out the most heat, there's enough about so a win win.

Whack it in two and let's see its innards? Poplar when freshly cut is a lovely off white and thinner sections could easily peel off the bark, here's what the bark looks like... the "diamond" indentations eventually get bigger and gnarly and less easily identified on large trees near the base. I'm not sure about what you have but I doubt that it's poplar. Someone is bound to say, No that's elder, but to remove doubt its the cut limb on the left and the one lying on the ground not the spindly bent thin limb on the right

I would have thought so as the wood is split so has a cut face larger than unsplit wood so can lose moisture as air moves across it and I would presume that the less moist area draws moisture from the rest of the log??? However I did notice that the poplar I cut and split a year ago had dropped to 7% in September but by November had risen to 12%, my wood is stacked in an enclosed shed with lots of vents so slightly different to your scenario.

Not sure, it's a personal thing with me, I don't have to store petrol but I do have to have a spare pair of batteries (2×4ah & 2×3) which gives enough power to more than fill my car with the back seats down. If I'm cutting at home I charge as I go. I don't like the fact that there is no noise from it unlike an idling conventional saw so I put the brake on if I set it down or have to reach across the blade and when transporting or moving around I remove a battery, probably unnecessary but that's what I do. If I was just cutting at home I would have a mains powered saw.

Bought a bison 800mm and found that from the start it isn't digging in as I expected. I'm using it to pick up rounds to split with an axe and then to move the split wood around and save my back. It goes into alder either bark side or cut face but I'm having difficulty getting it into cherry and it just bounces off Plum! Should I try to file more of a cutting edge into the inside of the curve to help it cut into the wood better? Many thanks for relevant, non pi$$ take, replies

Your taking a lot for granted, how do you know anyone's nationality, am I English? Scottish? Welsh? Nigerian? Pretty much all the advice I have had has been good. Well you're the one who is wandering around in his Y fronts with his chopper in his hands . Perhaps we could start again at the beginning? Hi I live (general area) I have xyz area of abc timber to fell and process, I have/don't have any qualifications ...yada yada. Then people better qualified than me would be in a better place to answer your questions, too many people turn up on forums and ask the usual "What's the best car/BBQ/fishing rod/router/sewing machine...." ask a silly question get a silly answer. Either that or your a troll or banned ex member or both.

Just me but I would also add in safety gear as well, I see too many people running around with little or no safety gear as well as people wandering into the working area as if they are iron/superman. Chills my bones.

I have a small pile like that but I have a couple of chainsaws, so I just leave them until I have some limbs to cut to length at home and do it all together and that's this mornings job. If you don't cut a lot and also don't want to annoy your neighbours I thoroughly recommend an electric chainsaw.

I'm thinking blackthorn and really hoping that it is but I have seen Damson with thorn on it, however not as much as this had. fortunately its 6-9" diameter below it is alder

Thanks, I thought it was due to the bark and small branches but I have never cut/split any.

I was out for a walk locally and a bit of community woodland had been trimmed back that day and I noticed a small log hadn't been lifted and what made it so noticeable was the colour of the cut end. I've not seen this before any ideas? 48 hrs later and the orange colour is starting to colour the split face too. Forgot to add, very tight grain that doesn't want to split straight or cleanly

We have an older house so it was designed for airflow, however we also have DG and its a bungalow. We keep the lounge door open and a fan blows air into the hall to warm the rest of the house and keep us cooler as it can get up to 24'c easily with the door closed, 19-21 when open. Using the fan means we have a draft but its hardly noticeable. Our stove is 5kw and draws fine even when we are in the middle of storms no blow back. If our house was newer and therefore better sealed then we would have gone for external air but its not so we allow the airflow to keep the inside dry and mostly condensation free.

Two car driveway adjacent to road, might be a bit tight for articulated lorries but fine for smaller vehicles. We're retired but still active so can usually be about during the day. If phoning please contact by text first as we don't answer unknown numbers. 5 cu is probably the maximum we could take in one delivery and happy to take smaller amounts. No willow thanks.
