Measuring footpaths

Hi. Not quite at related but I'm measuring paths to get distances put on finger posts. I've been using GGP software and some will be measured by wheel but there are some long paths that don't show on mapping software or maps. Anybody got any neat ideas for measuring these distances without walking with the wheel? I'm going to try strava on my bike but I'd rather use something accurate to the metre and that is in 0.1km intervals.

Do you know the rough location? If so do it on Google maps. Had a measuring thingy on it.

Gps.com is a good site for creating running / cycling routes. Has a lot of different maps and you can quite often set it to follow footpaths. Gives distances and elevation

Not sure what kind of path, but the HD or horizontal distance feature on a laser rangefinder can do some stuff like that.

I am an engineering surveyor by trade and could do this with my GPS to 10mm or so, but thus wouldn't be too cheap.

 

A simpler version of the GPS I use is this http://surveyequipment.com/leica-zeno-20/ not sure on the hire cost though.

 

Worth noting if going down the GPS path that it doesn't work under/around trees

Are the paths in os maps? You can measure on that.

Yep OS map would be a easy and cheap way

How accurate do you need to be ie what's the tolerance for error? Os maps in 3.175k to one should be good enough for rough estimates.
