Perhaps there should be a limit to the extension at which they can still be "driven"....Having used a similar type recently, I find their "driven" capability a significant attribute. It adds to the positional flexibility.

I would argue that you could achieve the same speed for the same cost by just get in 2 extra climbers and maybe use a ladder to speed up access.

 

I think road side is one of the LAST places you would want to be using a MEWP.

The ONLY reason I could ever see for using a MEWP, would be lack of skill on the contractors part and if thats the case then its probably a good call.

 

I know you are not a fan of MEWP's but really isnt that saying that you are more skillfull than everyone who uses a MEWP? And those that use them on occasion dont have the necessary skills to carry out 'real' tree work!

A MEWP takes you to a position that allows you to make a cut, I can do this just as well (IMO) with rope and harness.

 

My crane can lift several tonnes, move it and put it in my tailer, I CAN'T.

 

In simple terms my crane makes me money.

 

If a MEWP can make you money, buy one and improve your income.

 

I was not saying that the people who use MEWP's are lacking in climbing skill, I think they are making a mistake in using one, as I would sooner have the profit.

 

I do feel their is a risk of becoming "de-skilled" by using a MEWP.

 

In 15 years I have not had a single job I could not do with out a MEWP, I did hire one once for a week of reducing a Hawthorn hedge, I parked it up at lunch time on the first day and just climbed it all.

 

If MEWPS are so great (and it would appear much cheaper than some say) they will soon take over and I will be out of work

i was considering getting a mewp in for doing some horible skinny trees growing at an even more horrible angle behind a house on a slope, but after seeing this then no chance, i like the look of these types of mewps as they look very stable but i never considerd strength of the area where i would palce it, it is a small parking area but it is definately home made with some spare tar from when the fllats have been built 30 years ago, and there is a drain too, so who know how shallow the pipes are. thanks for raising that point dean. monkey monkey time it is then lol

Dave, you know I'm pretty much anti MEWP. You know me, you've seen my pics, you know I am not one for doing jobs inefficiently.

If I can smash it flat with the excavator and ram it through a big chipper, I will. If its the dodgiest deadest rottenest tree barely standing, I'll climb it.

Ergo, If I think a mewp is going to save me time, effort and money on a job, I'm not going to be hiring one for a laugh...

They are also very usefull for jobs where you have a physical impediment stopping you getting to the base of trees.

All the pic's I see on here are of jobs were I just think WHY ???

 

As always these are only my opinions, I really do believe people have the right to get the job done in what ever way they feel is best for THEM

According to best practice guidelines, we still should use them EVERY time, unless its impossible due to access constraints.

 

My take is keep encouraging everyone to use them as much as possible. That means I can charge a premium for doing the trees unreachable by MEWP
