Just to add to this thread..

You should be checking your krabs every day as part of your pre-use inspection. it is part of the LOLER regs.

There was research into krabs rolling open during use not so long ago, and the ones that performed best were the new type with the push in button on the gate.

it is scary stuff when you look down and one is open, even brand new 3 ways can be opened with a rogue twig somehow. to think before arbtalk i used screwgates every day(10 months ago):blushing:

I did 2 years as an abseiler offshore and all we used to use was screw gates. This is IRATA best practise. Apparently, the thinking is that they are more 'idiot proof' than auto locking ones. If the screw gate wont close the krab is knacered so bin it - simples! They dont come open at all as much as the 3 ways if they are done up right. Although I use 3 ways in tree work to comply. Just seen it from both sides as it were...

Local indoor climbing centre uses all screwgates, and auto-belays use screwgate karabiners similar to these, with a plastic clip that covers barrel and helps to maintain position of karabiner. (I think some manufacturers produce the plastic clip as a stand alone product - whereas some are integrated into the krab.)

Although, I use the 3-way for tree climbing, I never had a problem when I used screwgate's. I think laziness was the biggest problem for some people with screwgates. I would not be surprised if screwgates became accepted for climbing use in the future.

I think screwgates are safer than 3way, its just the fact that alot of people didnt bother screwing the gate up. Ive used 3ways in tree work and have had them come open infront of my eyes, use screwgates when rock climbing and didnt have any trouble once they were screwed up.

Me too. Much happier climbing on a screw gate. Which out of habit I check regularly. only krab opened up on me dangerously is a three way.
