Some advice required please:

 

I need to change the PTO seal on my compact tractor. I don't have a workshop manual but the best way I can see is to remove the seal housing cover and then replacing the seal once its off. Is the cover likely to be easy to remove? What traps await an unsuspecting amateur? Any help would be much appreciated

If its leaking from a lip seal just screw a self tapper into it and tug it out with a pair of pliers.

If the seal is too tight to shift with a self tapper then drive an old screwdriver through it and lever it out that way. Take care not to scratch the shaft or outer diameter of the seal housing.

It looks like the splines are very close to running on the seal lip. When it's out check that or it will never seal.

Well you could have at it as above or you could simply take out 6 bolts and do the job the proper way.

 

That's probably why the seal and bearing are in a removable plate after all.

Its the 'bearing' aspect that concerns me. Where is/are the bearing/s? Will the bearing come out with the case or stay behind? By removing the cover, is there a chance that I'm going to damage a bearing? The tractor is a grey import so I have to be careful with my spares requirements

I mean "would the bearing come out with the COVER or stay behind?"

It looks a heavy casting to me, I imagine it's dowelled and bolted to the rear casting and it will have a recess for a bearing and external seal. Pulling the cover plate off may bring the PTO shaft with it if it's the floating type but it would only need to be pushed back in.

What tractor is it, you should be able to find an exploded diagram on the net.
