Ball nuts sheared off

Its a well known problem.

 

The suspension is much harsher on a lorry. So the loads applied to the trailer are higher.

 

Think of it this way. A seesaw with almost even weights on each end. You can raise & lower it & the forces stay similar.

 

Now put a huge load on one end & a small one on the other. The small load will get accelerated about by small movements of the large load.

 

I think it came to light when caravans were towed behind recovery trucks when the tow car broke down. I have a vague memory that they developed a hitch for them to reduce the shock loads.

 

I would go along with this. If you stick a loaded 3.5 ton trailer behing a 4x4 it tends to throw the truck about on rough roads and you are always aware its on there, thats a bit of a cushion for the drawbar and hitch. Put the same trailer behind a lorry and you find yourself checking the mirrors more often to see if the trailer is even still attached because the truck chassis wont budge an inch , all the stresses then are on the drawbar/hitch. As John points out it may be worth getting a hitch with a spring/shock system ( never seen one :) )

Some angle iron from the bottom of the drop plate to the chassis ( at an angle ) bolt it in to place,

I can't believe you thought that tow bar would be ok, if that come off and went head on in to oncoming traffic of mounted the pavement it would of done serious damage

Just noticed you've bolted that tow bar to box section and unless you've got some plate behind it to strengthen it as you've tighten up the bolts it would of pulled in and helped the tow bar to wiggle lose and then snapping
