Hi chaps

Does anybody have any experience of having a newt survey done in preparation to build a new house, or is there anybody out there that carries them out or can put me in touch with someone with a bit of knowledge.

Cheers Russ.

We've just had a pond done by WS Atkins, checking the route of a new water main. Two young ladies turned up, took a sample of water and left with it, apparently if there's not great crested DNA in the sample that's the end of it. I assume if there is then they do the overnight trapping and torching

getting late in the season, but the DNA test is the most costly and, in my opinion, unreliable.

Needed torching for adults and bottle trapping - any liscensed half decent ecologist should be able to sort you...

Where are you based?

I was surprised when they told me as when we had an ecological survey for our own development on site only 5 years ago the chap used bottle traps and camped overnight to see what there was there with torches.

I also admit the cynic in me wondered whether bunging a couple of buckets or water from a know great crested newt site would have on the result.

I have legal mate who fought battle some years ago for a client who was trying to get planning permission when there were great crested newts in the area...

He reckoned he was the expert on them after a long battle .....( though he probably ever actually saw a newt )

I think those little plastic fences you see around building sites are something to do with them too

He eventually won and client got permission to do his building work .....

Oh yes and what was he building? Some ponds !

If you want to talk to him pm me and I'll send you his contact details

no scam involved, they are Schedule 1 Protected species under Law and need protection.

The legislation side has been mismanaged for years and a decent Ecologist can sort this out very quickly, given the right permissions and licences in the correct time frame.

Newt fencing is in use, I think it is rarely placed right and costs more than building a pond in mitigation - ridiculousness!!
