Accountant makes major VAT return error...

So my accountant has filed the figures from VAT quarter March-May 2015 instead of 2016 because they clicked on the wrong tab on the excel spreadsheet.... Dumbasses!

 

The £27k difference doesn't bother me at all!

 

Accountant away on holiday, how convenient.

 

Any advice?

Sounds like it's down to them or their insurance company to make sure you're not out of pocket

The accountant should be liable for any penalties and interest, but you will have to pay any VAT due, just as you will entitled to any refund.

assuming you have the correct figure just pay it. If its already paid and they owe you either call HMRC and explain or net it off your next return.

it really doesn't matter the amount, process is the same. If he has just submitted it then you have time before the payment is taken anyway. Just call them.

I guess they need to sort it out and absorb any fines etc. Unless they forwarded it to you to verify all information was correct as they usually do....

 

As an aside why is your quarter March to May ? I presumed everyone's ran the same Jan-March May-June and so on

Just call HMRC and explain the situation. They should be able to scrub the return and your accountant can resubmit.

When you register for VAT it's up to you to state the period that your first return will cover. The subsequent quarters just follow from that.
