A few of ours

What sort of road speed do you get with the old county. 16mph? I need something thats reall good in the woods but with a bit of road speed too. Im drawing timber about 18 miles with an 885xl and it takes 1 1/2 hours each way.

one we had at college did 18/19mph

My old 1164 had a sticker in the cab that looked original giving sppeds at certain rvs in each gear and I think it said something similar - maybe just over 20, but I don't for a minute think anyone would have been brave enough to do that down the road in mine - it used to get a bounce on and take up most of the road fairly well before getting flat out in top.

The county is king in the woods, but even if you need it for only 10% of its use on the road, I'd rather have the 885 for all of it.

They really are that bad on the road as Chris says.

That's what I keep trying to tell another member on here Pete and he's having none of it (you know who you are :001_tt2: )

Forgot to say before - the scary thing was that mine was a "good" one on the road too, as the axle swivel pivots were all recently done before I got it. If they're a bit worn they're even worse

I have done some mileage on the road on County tractors.

They were all in good order and had excellent road manners; one reason I purchased one was to draw an unbraked lowloader carrying a crawler (wouldn't do it these days). Towing this trailer with the equivalent two wheel drive was a nightmare stopping being a particular problem along with losing grip on slippery gradients. The extra weight/stability/four wheels braked made big difference.

If your doing road work find some standard width wheels get rid of the flotation tyres; my mates 1164 used to get a bit of a bounce on but a good load used to keep it down. If your County is a pain on the road get a bigger trailer. Something like an 1164 would handle a much bigger trailer than an 885xl could live with and reduce the number of trips required. County tractors weren't made for speed but the actual speed limit for agricultural tractors hasn't changed since I was a kid and that is 20 m.p.h. for something like a County or 885.

Remember that an 885xl in a hanging state would be awful on the road too!

The 764 will do about 20mph on the flat and its not the worst I've driven. The biggest issue is the extra weight of the crane and all the guarding that slows it right down on the hills. Id go for a 1164 or 1174 little more power although I think a big engine will be getting dropped into the 764 at some point.

we also have a Highlander Bare based on a 4000 (same as county) that's fine on the road but light.

Countys are great to work in the woods and very manoeuvrable if you know what your doing and most importantly easy to fix
