Also when lifting them out of the holes I found this underneath. Is it placed beneath the trees with idea of making them easier to transplant at a later date? Or is it just a random but of nothing that happened to be in the ground,

I'm not sure why it would be the case but it kind of looks like packaging left behind from when the were planted - like they were transported in a bag, lifted in the hole then this packaging was cut off in situ - leaving the underside in place?

complete guess

I happen to be a fan of those Acers and have "rescued" a few over the years, I have yet to have one make it so I wish you better luck than I. Even my bought one has a bit of coral spot this year:thumbdown:

Dug these 2 out today, they stand about 3ft tall. What sort of value would you put on these please?

Just make sure that you keep the rootball wet, those leaves will curl and crisp in no time otherwise. Very delicate plants indeed. To buy them that size, in a container I'd say £75-£100. Valuable plants the jap acers, especially the disectum.

I've also rescued a few from sites I've worked on ,and have found them quite tolerant to being moved, done two decent sized ones about five years ago and they've romped away, here's one of them.

Sounds about right.

Those dissectums go for about £20 for a titchy one in a pot.

Do you expect me to transplant successfully Mr. Bullman?

No, Mr. Acer. I expect you to die!
