When will my cherry blossom?

Question

I've planted an avenue of 14 wild cherry down the drive and although they're all about 10' high (2 years old!) they're showing no signs of producing any blooms. A small almond I planted has beautiful blossom despite being about 4' tall.

Is it an age thing or do they have gender?

If you wanted masses of blossom without the fruit. Instead of wild prunus avium, the double flowering firm prunus avium plena is sterile

Wish I'd known that when I planted them (although they were part of the Woodland Trust MOREwoods scheme and that was all that was available). Some fruit would be nice for the birds anyway

We had a cherry in the back garden which grew from a sucker and it grew very quickly. It had lots of blossom and fruit and I noticed the birds liked them so I tried one out of curiosity. It was not one of my better ideas, the taste was horrible, a cross between bitter and sour and it was not long before the tree was down as it outgrew it's situation.

You could always graft them with somethings nicer.

I think I'll wait until they're a bit bigger. They're in tubes at the moment so accessing the trunk isn't straightforward. Nice idea, though, might try that on one elsewhere in a less formal arrangement (these are all planted up the drive in an avenue)

If you can wait until next spring , I will come and do them for you.

I do a bit of freelance grafting /budding.

We can make them look very pretty.

That's very kind, let's see how they do this season.
