Sycamore is bouncy but once you get in it should split easily. Just let it dry in rings then aim for the cracks. As said above it's better to use a splitting maul than an axe.

It's good firewood, similar to ash I find.

 Eat another Weetabix for breakfast!

Seriously, if you can't split sycamore by hand you need to get a splitter, because just about everything else is more difficult.

Very different bark though and plane is twice as heavy when green

Oh yes . Absolutely . Also an irritating bugger to chip when in leaf !

These are green logs as in cut down 2 days ago and I'm using a Fiskars x27 on them. They are pretty straight and mostly knot free it's just the axe bounces off them.

I split Sycamore on a regular basis, no probs with it, I use a splitting maul.

Take it you have the piece you are about to split on a good solid piece of wood underneath it so that the ground does not absorb all the energy you are putting into the maul swing?

Sharpen your axe so it sticks in, then lift axe and log attached above your head spin it round on the down ward stroke so the axe hits hits the block upside down and hey presto! The logs own weight splits itself
