the downside with asking if earing protection is Adequate on certain Models of helmet in certian situations is very difficult for the person using them to determine as its an accumalated damage to hearing and ifs its only a couple of db under protected you prob would not notice but over time the damage will be done

When you are using a Woodchipper what SNR protection do you use? I have been reading an HSE document that recommends SNR30 for most of the Woodchipper models tested.

I notice that many helmets incorporating ear protections seem to have lower ratings - such as the Pfanner Protos which is SNR26. The Husqvarna helmet mounted rated the same.

The 3M Peltor website also shows that protection rating reduces when the device becomes helmet mounted too.

Do you generally use a second set of ear defenders for wood chipping or do you carry on using the ones connected to a climbing helmet that are rated below 30SNR?

no matter what i do i use peltor optime III which are 35snr.

I use the msa/sordins (33 snr) too, as they were the highest rated. I don't really see the point of having ones that are only just adequate? when I replace them I'll get the peltor x5 probably, rated at 37snr. The extra material doesn't hinder me at all? They're probably a few grams heavier too, but I can offset that by shaving if I wanted to.

According to that research I linked to earlier, noise at user position was around 100dB, which would mean the protos protection is plenty.

The mention (in the first post) of snr dropping when connected to a helmet was news to me, anyone got any more info on this?

It was on the ratings on the 3M website. The helmet mounted versions were 1db or so less than the headband equivalents.

With CS 38 39 coming up am looking for a decent climbing lid and ear defender set up from the outset you see
