Parking a trailer on double yellow lines

Recommended Posts

We often leave our tracked chipper trailer on the road with the nose lock on it and take the number off, mainly to stop somebody stealing the plate as well but I suppose it is then very hard to identify it without the number plate on the back. Although I am guessing this probably flouts a law that says that a number plate should be displayed at all times

Makes absolute sense. I'm thinking, when unhitched, a trailer is not a vehicle and therefore not subject to associated regs - if unhitched there's no need for a number plate.

Time to try and get a definitive answer from parking Stasi.

What happens if someone crashes into it? I think you would have issues with the police and you definitely wouldn't have an insurance claim and could be sued for the cost of the damage to the vehicle that hit your trailer. Like I said the double yellows are there for a reason.

Ring a skip company and ask if they can leave a skip at the property. State there are double yellows outside and see what they say. A skip is definitely not a vehicle so you should get an answer there

Look at it from the other side.

It's an obstruction parked on double yellows. Could be a skip, trailer, vehicle, whatever.

The purpose of the parking restrictions is to prevent obstruction in busy or built up areas.

Just playing devils advocate here.

That's a good find and it seems to support how I was thinking the rules (or absence thereof) might apply.

The discussion seems to have split down 2 lines of thinking -

Can you (without infringing rules / regs)

And,

Should you (perhaps morally)

Just to clarify, I wouldn't set out to deliberately or intentionally cause an obstruction, the trailer is sign written so not a good idea for several reasons.

If I go down the route of leaving it on the yellows it would mean that 1 lane would be closed so traffic would have to yield to pass on the other side.

It's a very quiet rural village so not like an A road or heavy usage.

Interesting thoughts and comments so far! 👍🏻

Are the two similar?

No, not at all!

It seems NO rules apply to blue badgers....

Like parking in parent & child spaces because the disabled ones are full or further away...

That grates on me! It's not like they're even copulating so who are they trying to kid blocking up designated parent / child areas!

I mean, it takes an extra 2.36 minutes to grab a pasty at Morrisons if I have to go in the unallocated areas 😬
