What do people pay?

Hows about a percentage solution that both of you can agree on when you need his help.. Say 55/45 split on profit..

If that could be arranged, he might see it as working for himself and not working to fill your pockets...

For me, the fact that he's there when you need him is worth something.. then theres the devil you know...

That just sounds like terrible business. 45% of profit? He turns up on the day (most of the time I pick him up) does basic groundy work and goes home. I put the leg work in to get the jobs, price them, sort the logistics out, use all my gear (van, chipper etc) to give him a massive cut of the profit. I'm paying what I would consider a good day rate for what I ask anyway. Nobody it that expendable.

It counts for a lot. I genuinely appreciate him but I just can't justify the kind of money he wants for what I ask of him.

That essentially what's happening.

Hey Chris.... you can use the + button (next to the quote button) to answer multiple quotes in a single comment. (hope that makes sense!)

cheers, steve

Chris I've just been through a virtually identical situation, but my mate was a very good groundie.

I'd have paid him £150/day if the industry could stand it.

But it can't. So I didn't. And he's gone.

We'll stay mates though, rather than financial bickering eating away at our relationship..

Sounds to me like the crux of the matter is the guy is asking too much, and it's gonna be tough to disappoint him, as he's a friend. Not a nice situation to be put in, and there's the suspicion, reading between the lines, that the guy knows he's taking the piss. I worked for €100 a day as a groundie and supplied all my own gear and saws. And sometimes a pole saw and trailer into the bargain. And was bloody grateful for it. Might get better than that around Dublin, but still nowhere close to £125 sterling.
