Stihl or Oregon chain

I'm looking into buying a real of 3/8 063 chain from chainsaw bars

I get on with Stihl chain really well

But wondered what over people's views are

Stihl all the way. Plus their file holder system is boss. Don't know if Oregon has a similar system - think not.

I do like the Stihl chain, especially in 3/8 and full chisel.

I have always used oregon but was caught short recently and had to buy a couple stihl chains from my local dealer. I must admit I have found the stihl chains better.

Used both over a long period but only Stihl in the last 3 yrs . Stihl holds its edge better and lasts longer .

I stopped buying Stihl RSC/RS some years ago, because Oregon LP/LPX was a bit faster and smoother in my comparisons. The differences are minor though, so I don't mind using any of them (or Oregon LGX).

 

The above is about regular chisel chain in .325 and 3/8", I haven't compared anything else.

 

There was no price difference to speak of here the last time I checked - but I know there is on some markets.

Stihl chain 'seems' to be made from a better quality steel, might be just my take on it as i don't know alot about chain technology, but after running a Husky 395xp on 3/8'' stihl chain it just felt sublime compared to some oregon chains i had tried.

The Stihl chain teeth are harder. I dunno about the carrier straps, but I have noticed it takes more to sharpen a Stihl tooth(which also means your files go dull faster). Having said that, I rarely get Stihl chain unless forced to. The Oregon chain have much larger teeth, more room in the gullet, and yet cut just as smoothly, last as long or longer till EOL(end of life), but are easier to sharpen. I only notice the Stihl lasting longer between sharpening in some dirty cutting near the beginning of it's life. Otherwise, it's a wash, really. You can also use a 7/32 file on an Oregon chain until the EOL. On a Stihl, you have to start with 13/64 and end with 3/16 to keep the hook from flattening too much to be of much use(.325 chain files); something I just had to do on my 98 DL Stihl chain earlier today(which is why I am responding to this thread now). I also think Oregon chain cuts noticeably better as the teeth top plates shorten towards EOL, I would guess due to the cutter being taller, with a larger gutter.
