Looking for a unimog

The older mogs do have a serious lack of protection if you were to roll it. Roll cages were produced to fit by the likes of James Jones etc, but really you would be better off with a slightly newer one I think.

The U90 was designed to work hard, it just doesn't handle it as well as the rest. Probably a good half way house between a full spec mog and a Transit tipper, but when going that far you may as well do it properly.

Any of the models with a turbo, so 1200 and above, would be my choice for serious work. The standard OM352 engine with no turbo is sluggish to say the least.

Thanks for that, seems I'm looking for a agg spec square cab 1200 or 1250 - 1600 or 1650 :-)

In your opening post on this thread you said you wanted a short wheel base, The `50 in the model number indicates a long wheel base.

You might of changed you needs since then, but I though I would just say in case you when looking for some thing you don't want.

Thanks for pointing that out. When I first posted I didn't realise that the difference between say a 1200 and 1250 was so little. Don't think it would matter either way for our plans. Lots to learn about unimogs!

Even the "long" mogs are pretty reasonable in size and have very good turning circles. My 406 will swing round in places I'd struggle to do the same in my dad's Ford Fiesta!

It's a long time since I owned something that will turn like that. Owning a mixture of lwb Landies and Japanese pickups for the last ten years has got me into the habit of doing a fifteen point turn every time I need to turn around!:laugh1:

a few facts most of you dont seem aware opf concerning mogs.....lwb models are very rarely available as agri spec due to how the TPL mounts, similary crawler gear setups not very common on lwb, age of vehicle will determine engine type, OM352a or OM366a or OM366la, OM366 motors rev slightly lower and usually have the high speed axles fited....but not always, the lower revs mean just the same 50ish speed, if your going to use it for arb work, even commercially, your stuck with an O licence and white diesel, or take the risk of being hammered by DVSA, (there is NO grey area, its been hammered to death on here before) Unless you absolutly require the abilities of a mog i.e. in the forests, or off road, think about getting something easier to run and get to grip with, an RB44, or an ex military 4x4 truck, youll get your pto, and tipper box capability, but save on the grief of running a full blown mog

Thanks agrimog. Agreed the class of unimog has been well covered on here, I've read so many posts and also been through everything on GOV website about it. I don't wish to make another issue about it but could I ask your opinion of what I believe is right for us.

I would intend to use the unimog agg registered and as a tractor. This would be for work on highways, road side trees, use of big chipper, all chip blown back into the site. Or use of winch for directional felling/winch trees to chipper.

Rural site clearance, natural England funded, claiming back agricultural land. Or clearing woodland back to open ground. Blowing chip into the mog to move it around site but nothing removed from site. Winching.

If we use the mog for domestic tree work it would be for the chipper or a splitter or crane (if we had one) or winch but not hauling anything away.

Where I think we would technically not be correct to use the mog agg registered is a building site clearance or any road haulage at all.

We have a alpine tractor, in the summer it's kept busy topping agricultural grass, do you think we would be correct to tow the alpine/topper to site on a trailer ?

Many thanks
