Yep I'm listening to it just now and there's clearly a rhythm guitar playing chords, I guess I'm just used to hearing him playing as a trio... probably also Jimi.

Which part of the song and which guitar part is the chord you're looking for.

When the lyric says " joke " ( life is but a joke ) on the word joke there is a bass note and what sounds like a diminished or suspended chord . Have listen . The bass player is involved . Its played like that by Jim as well .

To be honest with you I heard , or noticed Jims version first . To me Bob was just a political hippie at the time and I put him in with Leonard Cohen and such . I was only 17 and very influenced by the likes of Jefferson Airplane/Starship etc etc .

I was more into folk blues including cohen, dylan, pentangle, davy graham, lightfoot, than heavier stuff but liked Grace a lot after Woodstock, I will have been with US conscripts in Germany for a short while then listening on the 8 track to Steppenwolf, Lauden wainright, Arlo Guthhrie, Buffalo springfield, Beacon street union, Doors to name but a few. ( Ruby was banned on the base).

Overall I was optimistic, only now do I realise how misplaced, who could have thought things would get so much worse.

A quick listen to the electric ladyland version it sounds like a downwards progression on the bass, on a my normally tuned guitar would seem to be F Eb C but an octave lower, so if you were a half step down  the notes would be F sharp E C sharp, the rhythm chord at that point on this version is indistinguishable to me, but I think it's the bass.
