Yes, I just looked this up on the HSE website. Seems LOLER doesn't apply but PUWER would if we had employees & the truck is company registered. In my case its no to both as its in my name/address & we have no employees. Theres no telephone advice line at HSE so I had to leave an email which they hope to answer with...30 days!

Google LOLER ACOP http://www.hse.gov.uk/work-equipment-machinery/loler.htm

I think your assumption that it may not apply because you don't employ may be flawed.

I've had a read to check for my own interest ref tipper trailer. I think it wouldn't apply because it's not lifting a load clear of the ground but will need to read again to be certain.

Maybe Paul or LOLER UK may have a definitive answer

Just called SI (Statutory Inspections) at Loughborough & they confirmed the answer is that no official LOLER/HUWER etc inspections are needed, as R Mac said, the ram mechanism pushes not lifts. They weren't interested whether I was an employer/own truck etc. Thanks all.

HSE say tippers are exempt from LOLER. As work equipment they are likely to need an inspection but you could do that your self by following the manufacturers maintenance advice and just keep a diary of when you checked things.

Pretty sure it doesnt matter whether the users are employed, self employed or business owners, its still work equipment.
