Defender gvw and gtw

I've just bought another defender 110 ex-utilities. It's the uprated 3500 gvw type.

This is where it gets a little confusing... My other ex-utilities 110 is 3500 gvw, 7000gtw.

The new one is 3500 gvw, 6550 gtw. So I can only tow 3050kgs. All other defenders can tow 3500kgs so why might this one be different?

I'm waiting for the v5 to arrive but I suspect it will say the same as the vin plate.

Is it possible to get the v5 & vin plate changed to uprate the gtw?

Could it be a case of picking and choosing where the GTW lies, ie you could tow the full 3.5 ton but your vehicles payload would have to come down to meet the 6550 limit. Iv never heard of a defender not plated to tow 3.5t

I'm hoping that's the case! I could live with that.

Here's a pic of the vin:

yes with air brakes, forgot about that one:blushing:

would you have to get a tacho because of towing over 3500kg?

Yes as soon as the total weight exceeds 3500kg you need a tacho unless used under one of the exemptions, the exemption that principally applies is if the equipment is for use of the driver at site which is within 100km of base.

The plates on the vehicle for GVW, axle and train weights are maximums, the maximum towing weight is as specified by the manufacturer.

So if the Gross Train weight is 7000kg and the manufacturer specifies a 4000kg trailer with brakes coupled to service brake then the maximum weight of the towing vehicle must be below 3000kg even if that is less than the GVW

Yes.

A 3500kg car with a 1kg trailer needs a tacho unless an exemption applies. As soon as the combined MAM's goes over 3500kg it kicks in.
